View Full Version : What are the specs to encode x264 for PSP?

I need what resolutions, frame rates, and exactly what x264 options can and can not be used when encoding for psp. I'm trying to make a psp profile for ASXGui and I need to know what to set the settings at.

Also, I don't own a psp to test with so I'd really like responses to be as detailed as possible so that I can ensure a working profile in ASXGui.

I really wish hardware manufacturers were more detailed when listing their specs, instead of just "H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (CABAC) (AAC) and Baseline Profile (AAC)"

Max 3 b-frames, level 3, max res 480x272, also 720x480, max 2 reference frames, mixed refs, no b-pyramid, up to 30fps, inloop is fine.

^ I'm using 3 reference frames and it plays fine, actually.

Does this all look good then?

UPDATE: 3ref frames work as well :)

I had reports from users trying to make video for psp that long videos reported "media not supported" when using 3 ref frames. They dropped it to 1 and it worked. I know I had to set my iPod profiles to 1 reference frame for longer videos to work.

Will 3 b-frames and 3 reference frames work? I noticed that MeGUI's psp profile has 2 b-frames and 3 reference frames.

Remember, I don't have a psp to test it myself.

Yeah, I'm using 3 B-Frames and 3 Ref Frames. Works perfectly.

I was indeed having trouble remembering whether it was 2 or 3 :) Thanks for reminding me!

Oh, and I think the PSP can take more than 2Mb/s.

It can decode a lot more :) It will play even 10+Mbps! Madness!

Oh wow, though I doubt any video would need that kind of bitrate on the psp. What would be a good max bitrate? 10mbps? Or none at all?

Once I did something very crazy. I encoded movie 720x480@20Mbps and it played without any problems! I was in shock!

What the hell kind of CABAC decoder does that thing have?!

So would you suggest no maximum bitrate then?

This plays (http://www.mediafire.com/?xlxcfzdlz3c) without any slow down on my PSP :)
It was supposed to be encoded at 25Mbps but source wasn't complicated enough so I got only ~20Mbps :) (28.8 Mbps peak)

For all that power it is pathetically sensitive to resolution...

In case this isn't known to someone in the thread, PSP has dedicated hardware to assist h264 decoding, it's not using a pure software decoder.

You haven't dicovered America:) We all know that. Nevertheless decoder's efficiency is amazing! PSP2 with FullHD support should be possible in 5-10 years:)

Yeah... it's kind of sad... the PSP has so much power, so much potential, yet Sony cripples it in software. There's only so much custom firmware can do. And it's also saddled with memory cards...

So though the PSP's AVC playback owns my Archos 605's, I use the Archos mostly, because of its 80GiB hard drive, huge number of media formats supported, and any resolution up to 720x576. Of course, it has its own problems... AVC is crippled on it, (YouTube AVC is tough...), and there are numerous bugs and annoyances.

Sigh... I need to make my own of one of these...
