View Full Version : Merging Subtitle Files with AVI using AGK
Burninator

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'm a long time user of AGK but can't seem to figure out how or if I can re-encode AVIs with separate sub files so that the subs are hardcoded with AVI file. Reason: I view most content via networked PS3 which doesn't support separate sub files. Apologies in advance if this has been answered already. Thanks.

Hi!
Seeing as how you've already created both the .AVI and subtitle file, there's really no need to use AutoGK for converting to permanent subtitles in the .AVI. Instead, you can use VirtualDub directly, as follows:
One way to have permanent subtitles included as part of your .AVI:
1) If not already in .SSA format, use one of the many subtitle conversion programs to convert the subtitle file to .SSA format
2) Open the .AVI in VirtualDub - and set to "Full Processing Mode"
3) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Filters", choose the (separate download) "Subtitler" filter and select your .SSA file - and click on "Okay"
4) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose the same video codec and configuration that you use to originally create the .AVI
5) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as .AVI" and save with a new filename

Welcome to the forum, Burninator,
Yes, there's an easy way to add subtitles to an already existing AVI, and that's by using AutoGK's CTRL-F8 trick. Here's a guide:
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic316471.html
If the subs are in IDX/SUB format, use the drop-down box to choose them rather than one of the default text file formats.

Thanks much for the responses. Per your suggestion, I tried AGK CTRL-F8 with several files (one with SUB, one with SRT, and one with idx/sub) and it works fine. Here is a possibly unrelated question I am curious about. When using AGK as I did to convert an already converted XVID file, the output file is always smaller than the size I have designated. So for example if I start with a 700MB AVI file (in this case with separate subs) and choose to output it as a 700 MB XVID file with original audio type, the new file is substantially smaller (say 520 MB). I compared the stream and media info and the files have identical attributes other than size. Just curious.
Oh, and thanks to other poster with suggestion to do conversion in VirtualDub. I got to point of downloading subtitler filter and was a little unclear how to apply it, but will read instructions and try later.

Hi-
...the new file is substantially smaller (say 520 MB).
That could be caused by several things; installing a new XviD over an already existing version without having first uninstalled the older one, using an old and broken AutoGK, or even possibly having saturated the codec. Do you have the log for one of these undersized encodes?

Perhaps I do have a mismatch that has nothing to do with the subtitle encoding issue. Here is a log for a straight conversion from an mpeg file. I selected 1 CD (700MB) at target size and ended up with 590 MB. I should mention that I believe the size mismatches have started since updating from 2.43 to 2.45, probably also irrelevant.

If I were you, I'd first uninstall XviD using Add/Remove Programs, followed by an upgrade to version 2.48. Then try again and see if the sizes come out any better.

hi Burninator :)
u can also try Avi Recomp ;)
& use stable xvid codec like v1.2 SMP 8.12.2006 ...u can find it in agk v2.40 or the new beta release.
cheers
Welcome to the forum, Burninator,

I have a question.
Can we set the sub to display on the left or right hand side instead of central, when we encode movie with autoGK?
Thank you very much.
