View Full Version : GCC 4.x Question
How come everyone's still using GCC 3.4.x to compile x264?
The changelog of GCC 4 sounds like there are a lot of optimizations and improvements to take advantage of....?

The difference is pretty marginal.
They use 3.4 because its the one included in Cygwin.

If you search this forum, i have posted many GCC versus GCC threads. GCC 4.x just wasn't stable enough or not able to run fprofiled in some versions.
I have not posted a 4.2.4 versus 3.4.6 thread yet, and i don't think i'll be doing any anytime soon.

from my understanding, quite a few of the improvements were from the coder's side. things like static single assignment don't change the types of optimizations you can do, but they do make them easier to code. That being said, I'm sure that the 4.X series is better, but I doubt the speed increase is so significant.
