View Full Version : Linux HD-DVD authoring?

I've had a look through these forums and Google generally looking for a Linux HD-DVD tool, but haven't been able to find any. Is there such a thing?

I know interest in HD-DVD has pretty much waned now that the format war's over, but my particular interest is that I have an Xbox 360 with HD-DVD addon, and the only way to get it to play HD h264 content with 5.1 would seem to be to create an HD-DVD from it. Now it looks like it's pretty straightforward to convert, say, an mkv file with HD h264 video and 5.1 ac3/DTS to a ts file. However I can't find any Linux tool to convert this into a basic HD-DVD structure (I'm not looking for menus or anything fancy, just the video). In fact, I can't even seem to find such a thing for Bluray...

Failing a native Linux tool, a free (as in beer) which runs under Wine (or failing that a VM) would do?

On another note: does anyone know whether the Xbox 360 plays HD-DVDs burnt to DVD5/DVD9?

@the belgian;

What HD-DVD's did you get the source video/audio from and how did you demux it in the first place?

You could always try and convert the video to a stream-able format that would work with the xbox, such as WMV; although it will take a VERY long time to convert the video even on a fast PC.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I know I could convert the video to a streamable format, but that will take a very long time for the conversion, and result in some quality loss. I'd need to be using MPEG4 ASP + ac3 audio in avi (as I don't believe there are any WMA Pro encoders on Liunux, so can't do WMV with surround sound).

Out of interest, are the HD-DVD specs freely available, or do they require a fee to be payed to the (now defunct) HD-DVD board?
