Hi,
There is something I can't understand.
I live in Europe so my dvd are 25fps. When I buy music videos dvd, videos are interlaced. And, the R1 dvd of music videos are telecined (maybe not all, but some that I have checked).
Can someone explain me how are shot most of the music video (24fps, 25fps, 50fps?), because I don't understand how they can make a interlaced and a telecined verison with one only master.

the normal procedure of producing a NTSC-based music video
1) master shot on Film 24p
2) master telecined to 29.97fps via slowdown to 23.976p and then 3:2 pulldown to 29.97fps
3) video being cut (that's why there commonly are pattern breaks)
now the result is converted to PAL this means
4) the cut video with pattern breaks will squeezed through a standards-converter.
these devices usually will blend nearby fields together to reduce motion artifacts a bit.
this is what makes the video look like interlaced to unexperienced people.
In fact it is not really true interlace (no 50 states of motion per second). But
it is field-blended. That means it still contains 23.976 states of motion per second.
These videos can be restored with restore24 or MRestore/CRestore

Others question :
If they are shot at 24fps, why aren't they soft telecined and speed up @ 25fps for PAL? (to keep the video progressive).
Why is the master telecined, they cuted? Why can't they telecine after the video is made?
How to handle the pattern breaks when doing an IVTC?

Well speeding up to 25 FPS will increase the tempo and pitch of the audio ~4%. That might be perfectly fine for regular dialogue, but it's a little more noticeable for music, which is quite important for a music video.

This is very useful information. Thanks for it! I think I am one of these 'unexperienced people' because I usually deinterlace music videos (usually yadifmod+nnedi) and then wonder why there is so much blending :p. :stupid: Looks like I will have to properly reencode all music videos I own.

That's still less than half a tone. Some radio stations do a lot worse things.
