I am trying to make a video library for my use when i want to watch movies etc. I am really getting tired of my DVD's getting scratched or lost and not being able to watch them when i want to watch them.

Is there a way to back these files up into a format with little to no video loss, and still maintain surround sound. I played some with Divx.. video quality is acceptable but I have only got sound in stereo which greatly reduces the enjoyment of the movie for me from the original surround sound.

I could back up using the original DVD vob files to a hard drive, but my stand alone player stutters with those, which i would guess because it can not keep up with the data transfer through the USB connection.

If there is a good stand alone that would work for this or a different format to use, please advise.

Thanks

Hi!Is there a way to back these files up into a format with little to no video loss, and still maintain surround sound. Why not get a DVD burner and make duplicate copies of your original DVDs?

I am really getting tired of my DVD's getting scratched or lostMay I ask why such things occur?

umm.. I just said I am tired of DVD's with the issues that they themselves have. As for HOW getting scratched and lost happens.. well, we have 4 teenagers that live here and they have friends. so with that in mind as well as other family,

very easy.

Much harder for them to take my hard drives out of my house and/or leave them laying around in their rooms, tables, floors, cars etc to get scratched/broke/lost. Besides I even have DVDs that appear to be flawless and will sometimes pause and skip, so I would much rather use a much more stable media.

If you want to maintain surround sound when ripping dvd's you should be copying the audio source not re encoding it to mp3 by the sounds of what your explaining, i have around 400 dvd's that have been backed up to AVI with AC3 6ch audio and all of them playback with "surround" sound perfectly, at least the ones that were orginally surround sound.

ya. that is what I am wanting. What software are you using to do that with? And is there a guide on use for it already?

Really appreciate the help.

For ease of use it has to be AutoGK

There´s a good tutorial that comes with it.

My process is probably abit abnormal to other peoples, i rip the movie to a ISO with just the movie with the tracks i want, no menu's or extras, i then drop the ISO file on AutoMen and setup the crop and bitrate options i want then choose the copy audio. Done in 2 steps.
