DTS does not play on my system.

I'm newb at this, and am only beginning to learn about audio.

my home theater system is 4 speakers and one in the center, it plays AC3, 5.1 sounds just fine. Recently I began to find interest in DTS, and as I have a lot of DVD's that have a DTS option, I wanted to give it a try. So I popped in Collateral and chose DTS sound - silent as night.

What could it be? Do I need special speakers or set-up to play DTS? or are my speakers just not configured to play DTS but can?

I'll look around more and see what brand I've got.

First, your Home Theater system must support DTS audio. This would be apparent if your system shows the "DTS" logo on the front face somewhere. DTS is a compression format, just like Dolby Digital/AC3 is a compression format.

Are you talking about a Home Theater Audio/Video Receiver standalone, or a Media Center PC?

I can't really recommend any product over another.

But my setup is a Sony STR-DG820 A/V Receiver,
a set of 3-way tower speakers in front,
bookshelf speakers in the rear, and a center channel above the TV.

You must make sure that your DVD player is outputing the RAW audio bitstream (DTS or DD5.1) to your receiver.

ok I noticed something, I forgot to mention the DVD I have is Philips DVP-642.. that could be why it does not decode DTS. My previous player, I took at look and it has a DTS logo on it. Is there a multi-regional and Divx/Xvid dvd player that decodes DTS? Philips seems to not have the decoder. Or is there a way I can connect my current Philips so that it decodes it?

You need to set your DVD player to output the raw bitstream. Your Phillips player will do this. Its your receiver that does the decoding.

According to the following, the Philips DVP-642 DOES have the ability to pass through DTS audio:

So, once again, the problem must lie with your audio setup not being DTS capable...

Well...

On page 27 of the Philips DVP-642 users manual it it says to goto the System Menu>Audio Setup, and make sure that "Digital Output" is turned on. Also, The digital audio connector on the back of your DVD player (Coax or Optical) needs to be connected to your Audio/Video Receiver. Also, you A/V Receiver needs to be set to use the digital audio input.
