The advantage is XMPEG is faster... what is this YUV12 and YUV16 means and how can I use this to my advantage.... can it make it encode faster.... How would I know to use YUV12 or YUV16 ?.. and what about removal of lines... like those tutorial on Nicky's Digital Guide....when a person moves or object moves ??

YUV12 and YUV16 are colour coding formats. So is RGB. MPEG2 stores colour info in YUV format, however alot of encoding programs convert this to RGB to do filtering resizing etc. This involves a number of additions and multiplications, taking time. If you work in the YUV colourspace throughout the conversion is unneccessary. Not all encoders support YUV though. Personally I use Xmpeg + VideoServer plugin + CCE SP 2.50 to create SVCD's and by keeping everything YUV I more than doubled my encoding speed, over RGB.

So if I use like say XMPEG....and video Server plug in can I use TMPGENC to encode it to VCD/SVCD and get better quality and faster encoding then. So in XMPEG ... when I get select the VOBs from XMPEG... do I put the selection from XMPEG to YUV12 or 16 then in TMPgenc.. do I change the settings from XMPEG or TMPGEnc...??

From memory I don't think TMPGEnc supports YUV encoding see http://www.rmvos.nl/body_wordofedwin.html

So how would I know which one to use the YUY or YV12 as in XMPEG ?.. Also Is there a way to do several VOBs [means several DVDs stored on the HD as VOBs or just 1 at a time]. Thanks and sorry for all the questions.
By the way I read that using this approach does not encode the audio.. so then can i encode the audio within XMPEG as Uncompressed PCM and then do all that downsampling later just to test...and see fro quality. ... now to look for CCE 2.62.. wonder where or buy .... hmm.

I use the middle option, YUY2.
If you load the first vob it should prompt you to load all the others. Personally I use the thunder mism that allows you to rip directly off the DVD, no need to rip to the HD first. Mainly because of lack of disk space.
Choose the save to WAV option in the Videoserver plugin. Also does the conversion to MP2 and the muxing and cutting if you select the right options. See the following guide http://www.rmvos.nl/body_plugincce93.html . Slightly different version of Xmpeg but the principal still remains the same. Probably don't want to buy CCE its rather expensive ~$3000. You can download a demo and perhaps patch it ;)
Alternatively if disk space is not an issue (i.e. you have to rip to the HD first) and you want a totally automated approach to encoding SVCD's then you could try dvd2svcd, uses CCE for encoding so its very fast.

My doubt is...do the video lose quality by choosing the YV12 format (12 bits) instead of choosing any of the other two? Or RGB-converting is for additional process only (like filters in vdub)?
If the video does not lose quality i'd rather choose YV12 as it encodes almost real-time!! (~25fps).

yeah.... ive wondered about that?
why are there 2 options? YV12 and YUV2
whats the difference?
whats the best?
whats the fastest?
why do they have 2 in the first place...

I use YUV12 or something as well... I noted that for some DVDs.. while encoding.. I see lines or when a fast movement is made or something... they have these horizontal lines.. In Falsk 0.594 I took care of that by doing a DeInterlace... that is correct ? and select 10-14 on the threshold and not blend images.... and that work well. I do not see a feature set similar to this for XMPEG.. any ideas how can I do it then ? Removal of those ocassional lines.
