I tried to respond/reply to a message sent by the 'moderation team', but whataya know?.........addressee doesn't exist. I got a harsh warning because I accidentally 'copied and pasted' some info on a vehicular problem that was supposed to go to truck forums.
I had to wait FIVE days to post here. When I signed back on and it went straight to 'new thread' or something to that effect. So I pasted the info.....because I'd already forgotten what Doom 9 was. I fixed my DVD burner problem the next day, thanks to forums where you don't have to wait. I assumed the only quicklinks to forums I still had up must be about the truck.
Anyway......so I'm thinking 'if you have to wait five days this site must be good'. I've been looking at a lot of posts over the past 15 minutes or so and noticed there's A LOT of warning going on here. Big brother's watching over everyone's shoulder. Every 2nd or3rd thread it seems someone's broken rule 1 or 3......or in my case 2. I'm not use to a forum like this. I like the laid back ones where you don't worry about so many ignorant rules. Guess this is prolly rule 6 I'm breakin' now so I'll be shunned by the 'moderation team'. Forums are to talk. We have freedom of speech (even in text form). I say exercise it and go elsewhere............but it looks like a lot of u already have. :thanks: for the 'welcome'

You betchya, it is. There is a wealth of info here about DVDs and ancilliary stuff. Nowhere is there any mention about trucks. It's easy to see what we are about - just look at the top of every page of every thread in every forum.
THE in-place to be for everyone interested in DVD conversion.

I'm not use to a forum like this. I like the laid back ones where you don't worry about so many ignorant rules.

No. And maybe you are alluding to the many warnings we give people about rule 6. This is important to us - we do not give help to people who are pirating software or DVDs - it puts the forum at risk - so yes, you will see warnings about rule 6 quite a bit.

Finally, welcome to Doom9. Feel free to post here about things concerning this forum.

Rule breaking is serious in any part of life. Here, it just pisses people off. ;) Most (that's not ALL, please don't bitch towards me on that :rolleyes:) of the people who have signed up here in the last year or 2 are looking for help with manipulating downloaded content that may or may not be theres. Trying to determine what is legit and what's clearly not is rather difficult with 150,000+ forum members and growing. Regular members are there to point the new guys and gals in the right direction. Most people don't read the rules because they don't wanna, they think the rules don't apply, or they're just too lazy. I fell foul of that within about 2 months of signing up. Since then, I've flirted with the boundaries of what's allowed here far too much, and had several strikes, mostly because I wasn't paying attention. I usually blame caffeine. :D

Freedom of speech is difficult to allow, in a forum where many people (mostly idiots, let's be honest, that's not directed at you, it's for the incompetent people allowed to express views in newspaper columns and blogs and TV interviews etc that the powers that be take so seriously and manipulate laws and legislation about to or already in force) consider what content this site carries illegal and/or dangerous to society. Decryption for making a legal backup of your digital content is legal in most countries, but unfortunately the US has this crazy (read unconstitutional) system where states can police as they choose the rights and freedoms to give their people. Governors, senators and the like, are mostly forced their hand by media and people high in office, and most often, money wins, sanity and common sense lose out. It's a screwed up world, and one that doesn't look on getting any better with Hollywood (read paranoid Fox) and associated partners calling the shots for HD media distribution.

One last point. If there was to be an off-topic sub-forum (unlikely), the traffic this site already generates would double... it's high enough as it is. :)


I'll have a look at this post again in the morning (on seconds thought it seems more like a rant). I've checked it over and I don't think there's any rules broken, but on the other hand it's late, I'm tired, if there's any contraband, please point it out when I'm awake tomorrow (roughly 12 hours, give or take a couple) and I'll edit accordingly. For now, this goes into my newly formed "epic posts" archive. :)

I'm not sure - I signed up years ago. But it is a rule - rule 2. Every new member has 5 days to familiarise themselves with the forum and its rules. That should be sufficient.

I really feel the moderators on doom9 do an excellent job on this site, and they are a huge reason why this site is so incredibly useful. Without them (by the way spending a huge amount of their otherwise free-time) keeping threads as focused and within the rules as possible, this site would be just another junk forum plagued with spam, childish insults, and otherwise nonsense.

If you don't like this site, that is fine, you're completely entitled to your opinion. However, I think it's pretty clear that you're maybe just not interested in the topics discussed here. If you were I think you'd realize the true value of this site and the wealth of information it contains.

Just because my virtual backyard is huge and I have a welcome sign up doesn't mean I'll kick you out if you don't behave.

You have the right of free congregation though and in the virtual world that means visiting another place... I dare you to find any forum where you'll find the same wealth of knowledge and knowledgeable people that take their time helping others out. But just like this is the place to be for many things, it's not the place to be for a lot of other things.. if you need quick fixes and don't have any intention of contributing, then this isn't the place. If you're here for idle chatter, this isn't the place, if you are too lazy to search / read up before asking, this most definitely isn't the place.

I work for a satellite installation company that thinks 'free time' should be spent working...lol. I admit, when joining a forum I usually just agree to everything and try to search FAQ and such before I look like the idiot (nothing new for me though). Not much of a rule reader. To be honest I'm sure I DID stumble upon the wrong site.....I had just bought a DVD burner and couldn't get it to work, though it was recognized as funcional in the system. The 5 day wait was a first for me. When it pulled up it was already on the new thread submit page, so I submitted what I had on the clipboard cuz I'd had the prob str8ened out already and forgot what I was waiting for on this one. I honestly thought this thread would have just been removed without a chance of any response. Seems kinda cool it's still here.....and I may very well be the idiot Inventive....lol. Slip of the mouse I'll blame it on. I may get around here and check everything out later, but I wanted to say I don't try being disrespectful pasting, but with what little free time I get I try to get as much done as possible and as fast as I can. When I started out, I frequented the dvdsoft forums - there was virtually no moderation and that eventually sunk that place. So anybody hedging any hope that we'll ever relax on the rules should give up that hope.. as long as it says Doom9 on top of the place, we'll be sticklers for the rules.

And you know.. one strike is a like a cop pulling you over on the street and giving you a warning instead of a ticket, it might be embarassing, you might not be happy about it, but things could be a lot worse, and if you learn the lesson, everything will be fine.

When I first joined, I wanted to make a post that I needed to check against the rules. I tore my hair trying to find the rules. Of course, there's a link on the second line of every page (dee-dee-dee) but I was looking everywhere else - especially the FAQs. I even did a search for 'rules'. Eventually I found them via some really tortuous route.

Can I make a suggestion that Rules be added to the top of the FAQ list? I'm sure I'm not the only one to have overlooked link at the top of the page (my eyes start reading at the menu bar). Oh, and has that Rules link always been at the top of the page?

However, I wish we were stricter. There are so many violations of rules #1 & #2, I can't even count. Long time back, I had suggested this (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=684830&postcount=1). That time, my concern was about rules #6 & #9. I'd like to put forward the same suggestion again, but this time, to expand that space and at least put some text in there, warning about the rules, or a link to the rules.

This is so true. I have no problems with the rules themselves, but it seems as though the some of the higher ups occasionally manifest their personal issues through moderation.
