"De-Scratching" VHS.

Hi!
I posted on here a few months ago, but since then I've had my VHS proffesionally re-transferred. It certainly improved the ghosting:)! I would like some advice on de-scratching my video. I've tried the descrath filter but it didn't seem to have any effect!
Also, which should I do first- denoise or descratch?

I remember looking at your first transfer. First the camcorder that was used when the video was shot is of poor quality, the apeture correction is way over done. Also the playback deck used in transfer may be at fault too adding to the problem.

My solution is all analog, use a good proc-amp for (de-ringing) between the playback deck and the capturing unit. Don't assume that the companies your are using know what they are doing!

Which proc-amps de-ring? Can they do better than AVIsynth tools?

I know ringing that goes out of range will be clipped in A>D conversion, leaving less to work with in the digital domain. It would be amazing if there was much useful in these areas though - IIRC this is a dub.

Yes there are proc-amps out there to be bought but made not be made any more as far as I can tell. Video Craft made a fairly good one which you may find on E-bay. I built a custom one years ago based on the TDA4565 chip. It could give quisi RGB quality from good S-Video. It also did excellent apeture correction which could be fliped for your problem.
