I have searched doom9 forum and find many threads dealing with removing layer break, but I didn't find one that answerd my question, maybe because my english knowladge is limited.

I use DVD REB pro,and I noticed a short pause on the encoded material, when playing it on my standalone DVD player. Of course the place of the pause is where the layer break should be on the original double layerd DVD. I found out that DVD REB under default setting dosen't remove layer break, because if I can recall it correctly ones jdobbs wrote that it can be a "strange beast", and sometimes better not to remove it.

So my question would be, that can removing layer break cause, that the audio stream will be out of synch? (Probably after the layer break).

I found that in DVD reb if I add this commandline: AGGRESSIVE_LAYER_BREAK_REMOVAL=1, it removes it, but in earlier threads I think there was this command line: LAYER_BREAK_REMOVAL=1, is this still works, I mean can you
remove layer break in DVD reb other than agressivly?

Or what other negativ side affects (I mean removing LB) dose it have? I don't use SONY standalone dvd players.

The audio won't be out of sync. This is perfectly safe for a DVD9-DVD5 encode. Note, however, that some cells are muxed with a non-seamless joint (and some are forced to be non-seamless by virtue of a cell command, for example). Agrressive LB removal might remove this flag from such a cell and you could have playback problems. However, on a normal movie, where the LB is in the middle of the movie, removing the LB is no issue.

Greets,

If you really want to remove the layer break you can pre-process the movie with DVDShrink in No Compression mode with the setting Remove Layer Break. I also like Logical Remapping of Streams if I am removing extra subs or audio tracks. Not sure if you are doing movie-only or entire disc backups. DVDShrink can process the entire disc for you or pull the movie out in ReAuthor mode and ready it for DVD-RB. Just make sure to have Shrink not compress the movie. DVD-RB does a much better job at it than Shrink. HCenc is a great encoder too if you care to use. If the movie is so long that it needs a layer break, then I highly suggest movie-only to keep quality higher. Either way DVDShrink can help. Of course jdobbs does not officially support pre-processing before running through DVD-RB. I believe more so for trouble shooting purposes from errors other people can introduce into the workflow.

Cheers,
Rick

I also like Logical Remapping of Streams if I am removing extra subs or audio tracks. This is dangerous if you are keeping menus. I strongly advise against it.

blutach - I agree if one is keeping menus then 'Logical Remapping of Streams' may not be wise. My comment was ment to be implied in a movie-only situation. I could have made that a little more clear. :-)
