I know nothing about this, but it seems to have some nice options for handling greater than 8 bits, out of range data (blacker-than-black, whiter-than-white etc), and avoid the kind of issues we have converting 8-bit video data between formats for various applications.

I don't know if AVIsynth could ever handle floating point video data internally, but there are some free tools available to parse the formats.

I use the format sometimes for rendering 3d stuff (supports alpha channel nicely), A4 300 dpi (2480x3508 px) single image sample available on request.

edit: example 8bit render (input openEXR clip), photoshop does not handle alpha correctly, other than that it should serve as illustration;
