I have a file with an avi extension but when I load it into Gspot it tells me Non-AVI File - Type Unknown.
Is there a program which can give me more specific info as to what codec this file needs to view?

Try Avinaptic or MediaInfo. Does the file render in GraphEdit? Try VLC to play the file - VLC sometimes recognizes valid file types and play them even if the extensions are wrong.

Hi!when I load it into Gspot it tells me Non-AVI File - Type Unknown.Would you be good enough to post a screen capture of the GSpot screen?

Your Media Info screen capture tells you everything you need to know (and should have already known) about this file...

You should change the file extension to ".mp4", because your file seems to be in MP4 container.
AVI is another container, and both of them can contain MPEG-4 video, but not all players support MP4 container. So if you need to put this video in AVI container, you can use an application called YAMB to extract video and audio to their elemental forms (or streams), and then use another app called AVIRemux to put those streams in AVI container.
You can find more info about this in FAQs about containers :)
