Help with cooling a Q6600 CPU

Hi,

I’m going to change my Prescott 3,01GHz for a Q6600.

I’m thinking of keeping the old cooler I had for this Prescott, a ZALMAN CNPS7700 copper-aluminum.

Is this cooler good enough for the Q6600 or I have to buy a new one? I mean, I hope the Q6600 wont’ be so hot as the Prescott, and I can't afford to spend more money if it’s not necessary, but I don’t want either to have temperature issues with this new CPU.

I have a Q6600 OC'd to 3.0 GHz (simply up'd the FSB to 333 and that was it). The CNPS7700 would get about 38-39C idle and 64C under load using Prime95. The CNPS9700 would run about 35-36 idle, and 58-59 under load using the same Prime95. Keep in mind that my case has adaquate cooling but not great.

I can tell you that my Core2 Q6600 runs constantly at 54°C using the sleazy "boxed" cooler ;)

So I think your ZALMAN cooler should do the job easily...

Absolutely. The Q6600 should actually run cooler.

Q6600 running at 38C @ Idle. I do have plenty of case cooling though.

Misfit however is absolutely correct.

The Thermalright Ultra120 Extreme seems to be one of the best air coolers for these processors.

I'd suggest first trying what you have and see how you get on, if you want better then I'd suggest a bit of research. The above link should give you a starter for 10.

It keeps my processor at 28 to 30C idle doesn't ever get past 40..
5000+ oced to 3.01ghz from 2.6
My old core 4200+ i oced a lot and it wouldn't go past 45..
