View Full Version : Codec comparison test - how to encode to VP6 and RealVideo 10?

Hey,

I'm going to make a small, non-professional codec test comparing the visual quality and encoding speed. Something like Doom9's test but far less extensive. So I want to compare both different standards and different implemenatations of the same standard (Xvid vs. DivX) - same as in Doom9's comparison. Therefore I'm going to compare:

- DivX (6.8*) - using VfW and VirtualDub
- Xvid (1.1.3*) - using VfW and VirtualDub or maybe Xvid_Encraw
- x264 (rev 839*) - x264 CLI-Encoder
- Windows Media Video 9 Standard Profile/Advanced Profile - using Windows Media Encoder
- On2 VP6
- RealVideo 10

* or a later version when there is one
** decided to pick VP6 though VP7 is the newer one since VP6 is the flagship-codec for Flash 8

And here are my questions. What should I use to encode files to a) On2 VP6 b) RealVideo 10?

Have you any additions else?

Regards, Pawel

RV10: Easy RealMedia Producer (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=73228)
VP6: Install vp6vfw and any vfw encoder(e.g. VirtualDubMod, Mencoder) can be used.

Regards, PawelI guess can predict pretty easily the results of this.

x264, if used properly, will crush everything (since I've already tested it against RealVideo myself).
Real Video will be the only thing close to x264, because the most recent RealVideo formats are based on the drafts of the H.264 standard.
Windows Media 9 will be a close third.

I'm not entirely sure whether VP6 is better or worse than MPEG-4 ASP, so it will be interesting to see how it compares to Xvid/DivX.

Is it ok to put VP6 into an AVI container file?

I guess can predict pretty easily the results of this.

And so I do ;) I'm not going to make that comparison test to find out which codec is actually the best one, for I fully agree with you that nothing compares to x264 ;)

I want to make it rather "just-for-fun" and maybe to put it on my website with some explanations (there are people who think DivX and Xvid are different standards or do not know the differences between them etc. - so my newbie comparison maybe will help them to get an idea of the whole codec thing).

Of course I will post my results here. But please do not expect something as extensive and professional like Doom9's test ;)

PS. I just struck on the idea of testing Dirac too. It seems that there are no win32 builds of the Schrodinger but I've found something else: http://www.vromme.com/dirac/

PS.2. Is there an application to check an image's quality? A tool that compares the original image with the encoded one and shows the calculated result?
