Hi a couple of questions reguarding Resizing, and Audio Volume which I'm having problems with. I encode with Megiu using the Xvid presets to a 1400 mb (2CD) AVI file. Being a Newbie I originally stuck to the default preset settings, without resizing. My questions are:
1) Can I Crop/resize my earlier files so as they have a 4:3 ratio. ie. fill the TV screen, without having to re-encode, or do I have to start all over again from the DVD, or are there Lossless settings for Xvid/avi that will leave the video quality exactly the same but allow me to resize only.
2) Is there a easy way to increase the volume on existing files or do I have to Demux the Audio, adjust the volume (somehow) and then remux the audio file again.
Hope these questions make sense.

hi,

1) it's necessary recompress the video to crop/resize
2) it's necessary recompress the audio to increase the volumen

Thanks Susana
Just one question then is there such a thing as a Lossless setting in Xvid so the quality of the video dosen't change because when I have tried to do this before using the Xvid presets in Megui the quality and size of the video changes. While I would expect the file size to change because of the cropping, the quality is far worse.
Again thanks for your help

No. The quality will be a bit lower because recompression is a lossy process. The size only depends on bitrate; it will be the same is you use the same mean bitrate as it originally has.

What is wrong? Did you rip a widescreen DVD and now you regret it doesn't fill your entire 4:3 screen? Could you please explain this a little? Thank you.

Yes thats exactly what I originally did and I was just hopeing that there was a quicker way of resizing the files to suite the TV. I have a stand alone 500gb HD player for the TV. Unfoutunatly by the sounds of it I just have to rerip the DVDs and resize and encode them again.

@donalgar: to each their own, but... are you aware how much of the image is gone? See the LOTR example, and if interested, read more here:

(My personal opinion:) If I do have to watch a 4:3 screen and a widescreen movie, then uncropped only, with the black bars at the top and the bottom.

If you still want to fill your screen, then you'll get the optimal quality by reencoding the original DVD source files again.

Yes, I see your point. I may have to do a bit of rethinking.
Thanks again Susana and Jeffy for all your help and advice.
