AutoMKV help me choose settings for high quality xvid result

I just found this fantastic program to encode xvid files, I want to know what settings should I set at to achieve the highest quality conversion results. So far I have set it to
Profile:2 Pass SAP
Filter:Remove Grain mode 2
default for everything else

Please help me choose the best setting. Thank you all

There's not a single setting that can do what you want. Settings including filters that are good for one source WILL result in poor output on another source. You are best off trying different settings to come up with what suits your eyes for your sources. While this means early on you may be re-encoding a source several times (best to just test a segment cut from your source) you eventually get the hang of what your happy with and will find you only occasionally want to re-process a source to try and tweak the results.

Personally I wouldn't bother with 2 pass encodes unless you need to hit a specific file size. I used to set my TV episode encodes all to 2 pass with each having an identical filesize, set so I could fit a season on 2 or 3 DVD's depending upon number of episodes. After a while of viewing these episodes and finding varying quality amongst them, I moved to using CQ/CRF 1 pass encoding and discovered that the filesize and bitrate needs vary greatly between even different episodes of one show let alone different shows.

As for filters Remove Grain at mode 2 just helps compression along a bit but it really depends upon your source what filtering you need. So if you have a particular source that you think needs some cleaning up, then try out some of the filters. Google them to see what they are supposed to do.

Try different settings out and if you have questions on issues or results you are getting then by all means post in one of the AutoMKV threads.

Oh and just to note, while responses usually can be pretty fast here, bumping your thread after 4 hours is more likely to come across as demanding (even if that's not your intent) - doesn't encourage people to respond.

I'm sorry for my ignorance. I'm new here. I'm wondering if any GUI takes advantage of quad core processors? AutoMKV only takes 2 cores.

AutoMKV and x264 takes full advantage of my quad Q6600. Check to make sure Threads is set to Auto or 6. The standard is 1.5 times the number of your cores. When doing multiple passes the first pass does not always use full processing power like the other passes will.

I might be blind, but where do you set the number of threads? Does it apply to xvid? I can't find it in xvid or x264's settings.

I'm running the .96b12 beta version of AutoMKV. Not tried the .95 one so your menu may not be exactly the same if that is what you are using. Advanced Profiles Editing / left side / half way down: # of Threads with an editable click menu to select from.

You can also enter the threads command via editing the profiles themselves or the command line. I have not tried it that way, just read it can be done. I have not made an xvid so I cannot say specifically if that uses all cores. X264 making a .MKV does use all my cores so I can speak to that. Good luck.

Thanks. Now I found it. X264 does take all four cores, my q6600 is running at 98%. xvid is only 75%. Good enough. It's too bad my Archos 605 can't support x264 in MKV because the difference in video quality (x264 vs xvid) is astonishing!
