Is deinterlation needed?

Hi!

I'm backing up a set of DVDs, mostly 2WW related and I need to know wether it is interlaced or not because sometimes it seems interlaced and sometimes not,

here, the mouse teeth is clearly visible, and interlacing is notable on COLOR scenes

but here the mice teeth is almost null.

Since most of it is B/W the interlacin issue is not frecuent but,
Does this video need any deinterlacing?

You may see interlacing artifacts in transactions, the video seems progressive.
But if you watch this in HA mode (sure appropriate HW and SW needed) you will never see any artifacts.

I'm using Mplayer/vlc using ati's free drivers, so No hw acceleration at present.
Interlacing artifacts are not visible most of the time and since it's pal it seems no telecine is needed.
Thanks for answering, I'll try with the fglrx driver or I'll just encode the fil two times to see if there's not any problem with colored scenes.

It's got nothing to do with colour itself.

It's just that the film sequences (which happen to be from old black and white film) are progressive, and the newer video sequences / overlays (which happen to be colour) are interlaced.

This is very common indeed in PAL land.
