video card memory bandwidth for DXVA

Will there be a gain in DXVA performance when moving from a video card with a 64-bit memory interface to 128-bit?

For instance, I'm trying to figure out if I should go with a nvidia 8400 or 8500 gpu.

Also, same story between ati 34xx and 36xx...

Video card is for the htpc so HD decoding is really all I care about.

HD decoding performance shouldn't be affected. If the card is listed as being UVD / PureVideo compliant, it should be able to do it!

I would suggest ATi as their cards can decode VC1 as well.

I wonder why we don't all buy 3450's and be done with it (for HTPC applications).

I really like how I could buy both a Radeon HD 3450 and Nvidia 8400 for < $100 and just sell the one I don't like :)

because theres still a lot of non-complient streams out there
even ones from blu-ray discs!

It's not that there's non-compliant streams out there (though that's a factor), it's the decoders, especially DXVA decoders, which are so strict in their requirements. One of my projects I'm aiming for the summer is a DXVA H.264 decoder that doesn't have abysmal restrictions like Cyberlinks.

I can't wait! Support and even quality of DXVA accelerated x264 mkv files is very spotty. I have to keep swapping decoders depending on the file...

EDIT: I should say this is with an 8800GT on Vista x64, which also has been discussed here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1126871&highlight=black#post1126871).

I just bought a Sapphire HD3450 and we'll see if I have better DXVA compatibility with that.

from the HQV HD reviews over the internet, the low end cards skip some of the post processing. so it's recommended you get something like HD3650 or newer.
