this is my first time doing this... I ripped a copy of a dvd I own using mpeg-1 format and it is a two hour movie that took up 2.84GB of space is this size seem to big?

After I ripped, using smartripper, I after I encoded with FlaskMpeg I noticed I had a three hour movie instead of a 2 hour movie... it had an hour of black screen, that took care of 95GB of the reason for such a large movie.... what did I do wrong to get this blank space of screen?

I took encoded mpg file and used TMPG to put it into viewing format and it was taking up 830MB for 58 minutes of movie time... the movie runs fine from the hard drive it just seems vary large to burn to VCD... what might I be doing wrong?

just new to the biz and thought I was doing everything ok... but something doesn't look right to me

When burning VCDs it doesn't matter about the number of MB's it takes up - the burning depends on how many minutes the CD can take.

Have a look at the guides...after ripping the dvd with smartripper open up the vobs with dvd2avi, then go to file-->save project. You will also need to extract the sound from the vobs, use a program to make it a .wav file (it will say what program in the guides). Then put it into tmpgenc and load the vcd template and press start. 830 megs seems a bit large for 58 minutes, but as coffercuffs said the actual size is the minutes (for standard vcd).

I use this method and it works great (the tmpgenc method).

The easist way to do sound is to do a downmix using DVD2AVI while you're doing your porject file, but if you want the best quality use BeSweet as it's much more configurable and does everything in one go.

I want to put this in mpeg-1 format so i can watch it on my portable dvd player... this 2 hour movie shouldn't take up 3 cd's though why is it so large of a file 2GB...
