Greetings -
Somewhat new to all this, but have figured out most steps in the process. Use combinations of DVD DeCrypter, BeSweet and virtualdubmod to generate AVI files of pretty decent size/quality, but am struggling to figure out the optimal 'solutions' to burning either AVI or VOB files so they'll play on my 'home DVD player'.
I realize that I could burn VOB files directly to DVD-R, and play them, but haven't found a solution that seems to work consistently. I've tried using a recent flavour of the Nero basics which seems to be bundled with every DVD burner on the market, but I've had mixed results. And, I'm completely stuck figuring out how to convert from AVI to something I can burn to DVD and have it play. I've fooled a bit with trial versions of some 'commercial solutions', but I'm guessing (hoping) there is a freeware alternative out there (translation: my leftist sensibilities are offended at mixing commercial solutions with my DVD DeCrypter, BeSweet and virtualdubmod setup ;-)
I've poked around the forum some, and appologize if this has been dealt with somewhere, but I was unable to find it.
Thanks in advance...

Try DVD Flick, or FAVC.

You can also try AVStoDVD (http://avstodvd.googlepages.com/home)

Thanks - downloaded the former, still searching for the latter. Will post experiences/results in the next day or so.

Just grabbed the latest beta (I live for the bleeding edge, so what the heck...), and am trying it now - trying to convert/burn and avi file made using virtualdubmod, and an IFO image (streamed) grabbed using DVD Decrypter.
I'll post experiences once its done.

You might want to look at TMPGEnc (it's bleeding-edge free), which can convert DivX to MPEG, which will play on any standalone player.
Details are here (www.doom9.org/mpg/tmpg-dvdauthor.htm).

Tried a couple of the suggested options - AVS2DVD and DVD Flick both crashed and burned - AVS2DVD basically wouldn't run without errors (multi-core high-end box with Win XP SP2, lots of RAM), and DVD Flick never gave me a DVD that would play (whenever I put the burned disk in the my disk player, came up with an error...).
But - did find a partial solution. Installed Avi2DVD, used FreeEnc (which is one of several coding options it comes bundled with), 2 -pass compression (more than adequate), output to .iso image, and then simply burned the iso to a disk. Three out of three successes. All from vob files, so perhaps not a true test (will try avi source later this week - as everyone appreciates, these tests take time).
AVi2DVD seems pretty solid - I've not interest in fooling with menus or the like, so for my minimalist needs, but be entirely sufficient. I'll continue testing other options, though, for the sake of completeness.
For anyone at the newbie level looking for AVI2DVD, you can find it here:

.... AVS2DVD basically wouldn't run without errors ....
Can you please be more specific? What kind of errors?
 ;)

Just want to say that AVStoDVD(beta) works well for me, btw it is very nice tool MrC.

I fear that johnny_canuck missed to install something, like drivers or AviSynth... let's wait for his answer.
@Rogi
if you have any suggestions how to improve AVStoDVD, please post them here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=126647)

If your source is DVD, then why are you converting to AVI before then converting back to DVD? Or did I not understand? Anyway, the easy way is to use DVD Shrink to compress the DVD to the size you want (usually DVD5 size), and in Reauthor Mode if you don't want menus or extras. A better quality way is to use DVD-Rebuilder for the job. The guides sections of this site has guides for all kinds of things, including shrinking DVDs:
