View Full Version : Does Vdub take advantage of quad core yet?

I've been out of the scene for a while and got a Q6600 now @ 3.8Ghz, after using Gnot I didn't see such a dramatic frame encoding speed increase averaging only 80 -110 FPS for basic dvd(m2v) 2 divx encoding jobs.
Last I used my crappy Athlon 64 3200 I was getting 30 - 45 FPS
encoding rate. I was expecting more from this overclocked, quad core beast.
Does Vdub utilize the 4 cores to a good extent, if not which programs do these days?
Or better question would be does the xvid/divx encoder utilize 4 cores and to what extent?

Virtualdub is just an interface; what matters is the encoders.
Of course, you'll encounter the general problem that Video for Windows makes good threading support in an encoder difficult, so most VfW encoders have weak or no threading (see Xvid).

You might want to have a look at Avidemux:

The UI is pretty similar to VirtualDub (with some room for improvements), but it does not depend on VFW codecs!
Xvid and x264 are "built-in" with full multi-threading support and I can assure you, the latter uses all four cores at 100% on my machine :)
The mult-threading capabilities of Xvid are limited, so it's not a problem of the front-end...

VirtualDub will put the decoder and the encoder into separate threads, so decoding and encoding can be done concurrently.
This should work fine if the workload is 50% encoding and 50% decoding. And if you have only two cores!
But usually you will have 90% workload for encoding! And if you have more than two cores it can't help to use all cores.
Like Dark Shikari said: It all depends on the encoder's multi-threading implementation!
The front-end (VirtualDub) can't do much more than putting the encoder, the decoder and the filters into their own separate threads.
Still the encoder thread will do most of the work (in most cases), so without a good multi-threaded encoder you won't get far...

if you only wan't to use x264 for encoding try avidemux
but if you wan't to to use another codec don't bother as avidemux seems to have endless bugs
