Can't open an mkv file in Virtualdub. Maybe w/avisynth??

Hey Guys:

I have an mkv file with ac-3 audio on in. I would like to run this file through virtual dub to create a .wav file that I could load into TMPGEnc 2.5. I would also like to create an .ac3 file using virtualdubmod using the same mkv file as above. I have FFDShow and Avisynth already installed on my computer. I understand I should be able to write a short script in notepad that will allow VD/VDM to open properly. I have no experience with the script writing and I am hoping you do!!!

It might be easier to go back to your source material - but since it's already in a single file why not..

You should try MKVExtract. It's a tool that can extract tracks from an MKV.

Extract the AC3, then you can decode it with BeSweet, foobar2000 or whatever audio application you prefer.

You shouldn't need virtualdub or (gasp) virtualdubmod to do this.

BTW - virtualdubmod is very outdated and shouldn't be used for working with MKVs in my opinion...

GUIs for mkvextract are MKVExtractGUI (http://coreforge.org/projects/mkvextractgui/)and StaxRip beta (http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip/download).

I opened up MKVExtractGUI 1.6.3 and loaded the input mkv file. Set my output file to the same folder that the input file is in. Then under CONTENT, I am trying to checkmark Track ID2: audio (A_AAC)

When I do that a box pops up that says:

Nuevo Formato Detectado

Escribe la extension que sera asociada a este tipo de tracks.

Extension de salida (Sin el punto) and there's a little box next to this that wants me to type in an extension. I typed in:

AAC-LC-SBR

And then hit Extract.

Here's what I got:

Track1.h264
Track2.AAC LC-SBR
Track3.srt
usk.png

Also, be aware, I am trying to use BeSweet which I have no experience with at all.

So, what do you think?

So your MKV doesn't have AC3, but it has AAC audio. Fine.

In that case, it's probably a better idea to go back to your original source, since it must have better audio!

Hi!

1) Why don't you use the same software that you used to convert your original source material (presumably DVD, HD-DVD, or BluRay DVD) to MKV - and instead just extract the audio?

2) How could you think that an MKV taht you created contained an .AC3 audiostream, when you created it with an .AAC audiostream?

I have been converting Avi's to Mpeg's to M2v's to mpv.pulldowns and finally to dvd. I have never flirted w/ mkv's and I would like to learn how to do it. I just had a rotator-cuff op and now I have tons of time on my hands. I am brand new to all the new terms of this mkv thing and all the software I need as well. I now know that AAC audiostream... is not AC3 or DTS stream so that silly mistake won't happen again. (Is an AAC audiostream the equivalent of an mp3 stream?). I want to learn a "SOLID" way how to accomplish this and this seems like the place to hang. If that's a good enough answer, I would love to get started.

PS. When I load the mkv file into MediaInfo what should the First Audio Stream read for AC3 or DTS? The reason I ask is, I another file and it says, "English, 48.0 KHz, 6 channels, AAC LC-SBR". I think its another mp3 (in my world) file. I am now on a hunt for something with a confirmed AC3 stream. I will have it before anyone answers this thread. Guaranteed!

They will also see that I deleted my errors 15 minutes before you decided to actually re-post them for the world to see. Hopefully they realize, that I did in fact, review the rules and take the proper steps.

I would be greatful if a mod would delete this thread.
