Hey folks. While I've done a bit of poking around looking how to do this I'm starting to think I'm searching the wrong way or Blu-Ray cannot do the following.

Q: Can Blu-Ray trigger external events.

Setup: Making a Blu-Ray disc to mimic the way an existing piece of computer software works. Basically have a project with 10 chapters. During multiple points in each chapter I want to be able to tell an external piece of software to do something. So kind of like subtitles but external actions.

For example: Go to this web page at this time. Or send a command at this time. The commands could be as simple as sending a flash exe a variable then having flash do what I want it to with said variable.

Given that Blu-Ray runs a Java derivative I -think- it should be possible. I'm just extremely foggy on where to find this information out at.

I actually have been finding the software route the easiest to deal with, but software relies on a computer to playback content. So far most computers don't do that with complete smoothness like you get out of a DVD or Blu-Ray disc. If it is possible I'd like to try it. The project won't be for mass distribution or anything like that but instead on a single player. (whichever one supports the widest Blu-Ray feature set)

This would be possible for a BD-J title. Unfortunately thats beyond me at this point. Try this site. It has links to forums which someone might be able to give you more info:

Thanks for the link. There seems to be a lot to go through.

If it is virtually inaccessible I may decide against this path. However, if I find some good information I'll update this thread in case anyone else is interested in doing anything similar.
