My uncle owns a Panasonic DMR-EZ37V and is trying to archive some older plays / theatre-related vhs tapes that are no longer being reproduced. He needs them for some theatre class he's teaching.
However, he came to me and said the tapes could not be recorded to the dvd. It gave an error saying 0 min were recorded. This led me to think it was due to vhs macrovision because a regular vhs tape copied right on over.
Anyone know of a firmware hack or something to disable the macrovision?
Or would something like DVD Red PRO be his only option? http://www.dimax.com.ua/dvd/dvdredpro.shtml

I haven't heard of a Macrovision hack for DVD players in years. A few of the old, now out of business, Chinese made DVD players had some hacked firmware that you could install that could remove Macrovision on video output (NOT input!), so I don't think that would help you anyway.
Something called a "time base corrector" or a "video stablizer" would do the job, but whether those products work better, worse or the same as the DVD Red PRO product is something I can't answer.

Unfortuanatly you cannot disable the macrovision on a dvd recorder due to obvious reasons i.e. copying lol
Why dont you just tell your uncle to buy the Leadtek: Winfast 2000 Expert PCI Capture Card
It will capture anything (including macrovision VHS tapes). I know this as i tried and the quality is superb 99.99% close to the orginal (in my own opinion) and the capture card is dirt cheap(say $20 including P&H on ebay).
All you need do is connect the VCR to the capture card (which needs to be installed into the Desktop computer which is easy just follow the included manual) via A/V cables and click the capture button with the software provided.
After you captured the video, you then can burn it onto a DVD using a dvd authoring program such as Ulead Movie Factory (which btw is included).
This may sound a bit confusing but its actually very simple and it should only take you no more then 20min to set it up and running.
anyways hope this helps
