Downsizing HD anime to SD

Hey.

As the title says, I'm trying to downsize HD (1280x720) to SD (704x400). But the results are not as good as I'd hope.

As the pictures shows, the black lines are getting blocky.
I've tried a lot of different resizing filters (LanczosResize, simpleresize, bilinaer, bicubic etc) and i've also tried using smoothers but with no good result.

Hi!

Have you tried Spline36Resize? In theory it may help (although, I am not sure whether it will).

Also, your pics are JPEG-compressed. That certainly destroys the impression of how the original and resized have looked like. So, could you please post your screenshots in PNG format if possible?

Made the images PNG and tried Spine36Resize. No go.
I've zoomed a bit on the resized picture. But when watching the two films the difference is equal to the pictures. Hope that was understandable :)

AAAFaster gives the best result but is very slow. Encoding at 10 fps :(
TIsophote was fast but the result was poor.
If anybody know of filter as AAAFaster but faster. That would be awesome :)

You're taking into account interlacing ? There's recent threads on that and HDi -> SDi.

bah! the sodding pictures wont load.

it's not interlace, unless something really wacky is happening - 720p doesn't support interlace.

also, any reason you're not resizing to anamorphic (704x480 or 576)? you'll get some extra quality that way.

any resizer that isn't nearest-neighbor will not be blocky. some prefer bilinear to downres, some stick to lanczos.
