vlc and deinterlacing

I'm having a slight disagreement with someone as to whether deinterlacing should be enabled on vlc. This is solely in the context of playback of typical film based commercial dvds on a pc with a pc monitor. I think not, they say yes, any insight would be great.

This totally depends on the movie :p

If the movie is interlaced, you will need a deinterlacer for proper playback on a PC monitor.
Otherwise you see ugly "combing" artifacts on all moving objects!

If the movie is none-interlaced (progressive), there is absolutely no need to use a deinterlacer!
Deinterlacing progressive film material will destroy quality for no benefit...

Take care: Some DVD's mix progressive and interlaced material on the same disc.
But the main movie usually is progressive (not interlaced) for all cinema productions, as cinema is progressive.
Nevertheless due to format conversion and/or bad authoring you can't rely on that!

The only reliable way to find out if a movie is interlaced or not is using your eyes :D
If it is interlaced, turn on the deinterlacer. Otherwise keep away from the deinterlace filter!

If you're going to use VLC's built-in deinterlacers, I recommend "linear". It's essentially bob (double framerate), but with linear interpolation.
