Hello,
I'm attempting to make a simple dvd, the track consists of just
one file, mpeg 1 (352*240) and mp2 audio (384kbps, 48KHz)
I'm using Tmpgenc DVD Author 1.6.1. The main file
plays OK, so I decided to add a motion menu.
The motion menu is a 60 second mpeg 1 with 224Kbps audio
@ 44KHz. When the program authors this dvd, the main track
is not reencoded, but the motion menu audio is converted
to lpcm.
When the dvd (from the hard drive) is played in Powerdvd
or WMP 10, the motion menu is silent. All other aspects of the
dvd play fine. Powerdvd states the following about the
motion menu:
Audio Attributes:
Audio Coding mode: LPCM
Sampling Rate: 48kHz
Audio application mode: Not specified
Number of Audio channels: 2
Bitrate: 1536 Kbps
Number of Audio streams: 1
I de-multiplexed the short menu VOB, and sure enough the
resulting wave file is just a flat line in Sound Forge.
But why? The input mpg has vaild sound.
Any thoughts about why the sound is absent ?

mp2 audio (384kbps, 48KHz)
Why dont ya leave it like that?
Ah, I just saw you're using another file for the motion menue.
So, maybe take setarip_old's advice

Hello, I see what you are saying.
I created a new mpg1 clip to serve as the menu.
The clip is 352/240 with 48KHz, 384Kbits. 24 seconds.
In the TDA 161 Help, it says:
"When a picture in an MPEG-1 or an MPEG-2 file is specified as a background picture, the audio from these files will be played. The audio has to be MPEG-1 Audio Layer2 or Linear PCM. (AC-3 cannot be used)."
However, after the dvd is authored, this is what Powerdvd
tells me about the motion menu:
Audio Attributes:
Audio Coding mode: LPCM
Sampling Rate: 48kHz
Audio application mode: Not specified
Number of Audio channels: 2
Bitrate: 1536 Kbps
Number of Audio streams: 1
The audio is still silent. The originating mpg is 4.5MB,
while the resulting motion menu VOB is 35MB.
Tmpg Dvd Author has re-encoded it. Is it possible something
else installed on the PC is interfering with the encoding?
Any other thoughts ?
As I said before the main movie plays fine, powerdvd says
this about it:
Audio Attributes:
Audio Coding mode: MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 without extension bitstream
Sampling Rate: 48kHz
Audio application mode: Not specified
Number of Audio channels: 2
Bitrate: 384 Kbps
Number of Audio streams: 1

In the "Menu Display Settings", under the "Motion Menu" tab, have you remembered to place a checkmark next to, "Use audio of the background video as the menu BGM"?

Yes, that option is selected.
I'm going to have a look around, and if I can find the
install executable for TDA 1.6, I'll try it on a 2nd PC.

I set up TDA 1.6 on another XP system and got the
same result.
However, I downloaded a trial of DVD Lab and using the same
assets, it worked!
So who knows, something funky going on here.

I set up TDA 1.6 on another XP system and got the same result. However, I downloaded a trial of DVD Lab and using the same assets, it worked! When v.1.6 first came out, there were MANY less-than-perfect pirated versions floating around (Including some that could wreak havoc on your entire system!). Is yours a purchased version, or "something else"?

No it's not purchased, but it's not a crack either.
I'm going to investigate this further. I'll post back if I
find anything.

No it's not purchased, but it's not a crack either. In light of the fact that Pegasys discontinued the 1.6 30 day trial version several months ago, there wouldn't seem to be any other options.
BTW - The "pirated" versions I'm referring to include both cracks and keys - and based on the behavior you've described versus that of DVDLab, I'm fairly certain that your "other than purchased" version of TMPGEnc DVD Author is less than perfect. As such, there's obviously no point in further pursuing why it isn't working properly...

That's fine, I can see it from your point of view.
The installation executable I have, and I *think* it originally
came from Pegasys, has been sitting on my hard drive
for a couple of years, it's not something I just procured.
OK then, I'll get rid of it and download the legitimate
trial of the new version.
