can someone suggest the most reliable blank for this burner?

I've used Pioneer, TDK, and Maxell and they all work perfect

i use generic dvdr's found at cdrecordable.com and they have not failed me once in my pioneerdvr-ao3

The biggest thing is the quality of the laser on your standalone DVD player. Your best bet is to order 2 or 3 discs (pick up some RWs too for testing you burns before commiting them to DVD-R) test them see how well they work in your standalone. If you have problems then try some of the better discs (like Pioneer).
