View Full Version : Lossless MPEG-4 editor?

Is there any lossless mpeg-4 video editor?
I realize that chopping up a clip on a non-keyframe requires reencoding. I just want to edit mpeg4.
I read about Vegas, but I want something that can chop up videos where the only copy i have is in mpeg4.

Can you clarify what you mean by MPEG-4?
It could mean about 20 different things (including DivX, XviD, mp4 container, AVC, AAC...etc...)
I think avidemux (and the newest beta of virtualdub) do "smart rendering" such that they just re-encodes the frames around the cut points

h.264 in mpeg4 container.
I like avidemux, but I want something where I can insert a picture or photo or type text (by itself, not over the video). I don't want to use premiere just for creating youtube stuff.
Womble mpeg editor was extremely fast, but still only supports mpeg1 and 2.

encode a new mpeg-4 stream which includes your picture or text with the same h264 options as the rest of your stream and merge it to the rest of the stream

One option, is to use with avisynth - Just use the same encoder settings as the 1st clip (especially dimensions).
Here is a sample script for making a video clip from a still

You could append the clips with avidemux, yamb.

Okay, thanks.

poisondeathray's suggestion is not lossless.
AVIDemux should be able to do what you want, and I believe YAMB will too.
Vegas might work, I am not sure. Editing from lossless before and saving into the same lossless gave me a notice during certain parts of the render that it was not re-compressing, just copying the original data, as nothing needed to be done.

I'm looking for something similar, capable to edit .m2ts files (1080i, h.264) created by a regular AVCHD camcorder. My requirements are very simple: I just want to cut off arbitrary chunks of the file without re-encoding the whole thing. Re-coding around the cut to close the GOP is fine.

I'd post your own thread...
But anyways, TsRemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=125447) should do the trick.

Just an adjunct to my old thread, I had an mpeg4 video-only stream from a webcam source 352x288 using the MP4 codec in VLC that, when played in the same version of VLC, wouldn't skip forward or show the total time. I tried using mp4creator, but it said: " bad QuickTime height specified:". Also avidemux crashes when trying to open it.

Are you using the latest revision (http://avidemux.razorbyte.com.au/#avidemux2.4) of Avidemux?
If so, you should report your problem and provide a short sample to reproduce the crash. Otherwise you should update and try again...

sure:
"a fatal error has occurred"
version 2.4.3, build 4276

I can re-produce the crash with Avidemux. But something seems to be strange with that file!
The file is only 106 KB in size (was that intended?) and I neither get any video output in MPlayer nor in MPC.
Am I expected to see anything ???
Also the backtrace tells me that Avidemux crashes in the mpeg indexer:
Assert failed at file C:\Dev\avidemux_2.4\avidemux\ADM_inputs\ADM_mpegdemuxer\dmx_indexer.cpp, line 227
This indicates either a bug in the indexer or your file is borked and the indexer isn't prepared for that problem...

It was originally 62mb, but I didn't want to send you that. I chopped it up in virtualdub's hex editor.

Hmmm, blindly chopping the file may produce a corrupted file. So Avidemux might not crash for the original reason (but maybe it does - we don't know).
You should cut out a piece of ~5 seconds with a suitable editor and make sure the sample plays properly in a player...

I'll record a new video with the original videolan parameters since the vdub hexeditor overwrote the original. Avery Lee, can't you put a "Save As" function?

I figured out the problem, I was putting mp4v video into an mpeg2 ts file, or "encapsulation method" according to vlc. :o VLC doesn't give a warning about this.
the video is bad because the lights were off.

Also, to clarify, avidemux worked great with the lossless editing of mpeg-4 video files. I think ranguvar was confused as I was actually posting two different questions, one about chopping the mpeg4's, and another question was how to make a video from an mp3 file, and also, third, how to make a video with text. Windows Movie Maker does that fairly easily. I know, I know, wmv sucks.

I still don't get any video output from MPlayer or MPC. Also Avinaptic doesn't give proper information.
So I still think that file might be corrupted/invalid and thus crashes the Avidemux...
how to make a video from an mp3 file
Load an image sequence (or an existing video), add the MP3 as "External MP3" and save the result. (Avidemux)
how to make a video with text. Windows Movie Maker does that fairly easily. I know, I know, wmv sucks.
Maybe you may abuse Avidemux' subtitle feature for that. Or use a commercial editor, like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere...
