I understand there's a way to burn a BD image on a DVD-9 and it is supposed to play just fine at least on some BD players such as the PS3.
In fact, I tested it on a DVD-5 and the PS3 recognized the disk as "AVCHD" and played it in full HD resolution.

But what would happen if I use a DVD-9 instead? Isn't it supposed to have a "layer break" somewhere in the middle?
If yes, how to insert that in a BD image?
If no, why?

Have you tried with IMGBurn? It can usually determine a suitable Layer Break point.
