DVD-RB is designed to backup DVDs and/or convert them to another format (such as MOBILE). It currrently doesn't accept other sources.

Give SVCD2DVD a try. Works great for converting AVI's and authoring the disc with menus.

You may want to try the free avidemux to convert avi etc to mpeg2.
