View Full Version : Strange encoding problem with h264

I use my PC as a way to view and encode UK satellite TV. I use FireDTV S2 as my capture device. All channels view fine when watching them back, but on 1 channel when I try to edit it to either remove commercials or change codec then I get an annoying blocking problem, like flashes of blocks (not the usual lack of bandwidth type effect, but more a flickering flashing every few frames). It doesn't matter what type of codec I put it to, like MPG2 or h264, it still happens. But it doesn't happen on all HD channels, just one that I have found, yet they all use the same h264 codec, so I am confused. It is annoying as it is typically the channel I record the most. As mentioned, the original recording plays back fine, it is just when I try to re-encode it that I get problems.

Anyone have any idea why this could be happening ? I use DVBViewer to view/record, and variou software to re-encode, so far it has happened on all encoding software I have tried.

Is there any info I could post to try and help solve the problem ? Like info from the channel, or logs or anything ?

Maybe you're getting the field order wrong.

Post your script.

Also, "flickering flashing" doesn't tell us much. Post some screenshots.

Thanks. Well I use Main Concept Reference mainly and just accept the settings given, although I did fiddle around the field orders but had the same problem (2 options of bottom or top). Oddly though all the other HD channels work fine when re-encoded, it is just this 1 channel that is a problem. The only difference I can see is that this HD channel uses some kind of varible bitrate, from 7 to 20mbit, where as the other HD channels are set at around 18mbit. I have tried TMPGEnc Xpress 4 as well but get same results. I have tried to encode in MPG2 HD and h264 HD (tried various bitrates, low to very high) but both give me the same. If you can think of any better software to use then please let me know.

A clip of a re-encoded video file is below, it is 15mb and just a clip (I have captured an advert to avert any copyright issues). Thought it easier for you to see this way rather then a picture.
