Is HDMI replaced by DisplayPort ?

Hi,

Does anyone know if HDMI is officially replaced by DisplayPort, or are we in the middle of a war between the two?

And if DisplayPort have replaced HDMI, does that also apply for dedicated hardware players?

HDMI is the consumer electronics port of choice - DisplayPort is the same for computers. Since you can get adapters between the different ports, it doesn't matter much which port you get (even DVI), however, for manufacturers there's a big difference:
DVI is free
DisplayPort is free
HDMI is not free

Since most properties of HDMI 1.3 and DisplayPort are the same, I cannot imagine that the CE industry would swap again, but the computing industry, not having swapped the clunky DVI port for anything more convenient, is likely to go for DisplayPort instead. As it is, you can even get triple output cards.. you can fit one DVI-I (offering digital and analog output), one DisplayPort and one HDMI port onto the card without using two slots. Eventually the DVD-I might be replaced by a DVI-D (meaning you no longer can connect an analog screen), and then go away altogether but that process will take years (even today's cards that have no VGA output still offer DVI-I where a simple adapter is enough to get an analog signal.. so the card still has the D/A circuits onboard).

Like DVD and Blu-Ray, HDMI was created to serve Hollywood's needs. The result was a spec with nonsensical limitations that don't fit well into the computing world. Hence DisplayPort. The two are competitors in the computing arena, but HDMI pretty much rules CE.

It could be a very long wait... I doubt the CE industry is going to scrap HDMI seeing as most digital equipment has this port.

You don't have to wait very long for DisplayPort. PC Format April 2008 has a review of the 9600GT that has DVI x2, DisplayPort and HDMI, along with SPDIF. Cannot remember the card though! Will post details later.

IMO, DisplayPort will likely replace DVI as the de-facto standard for computer displays. HDMI has costs attached to it, so I'd expect TVs in the near future to have one port, just like some have VGA ports.

EDIT: Found the card, it's a 9600GT SONIC by Palit, and is double-width.

DisplayPort (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort) supposedly has dual-link DVI bandwidth and audio support, so merges DVI and SPDIF in a way.

Sparkle also has such a dual slot card. I'm still waiting for a 1 slot passively cooled 9600GT with 1 DVI + 1 Displayport (my display has displayport (but everything else, too).

I read the review of ATIs latest generation cards two days ago - and it seems the reference design already includes HDMI (iirc so do the latest nVidia reference designs) so hopefully the floodgates break soon (displayport would also be good on notebooks.. DVI is too clunky to be added so if at all only dockingstations have it.. but a compact port would fit nicely).

In theory, DisplayPort = DVI DL, so an adapter for DisplayPort > DVI DL would certainly help the transition to single-slot, and ease the upgrade worries for older monitors. The Yank's problem is they cannot let go of S-Video. That's (the Palit) the first card I've seen since the VGA days without S-Video on it, and good riddance IMO! :D
