Does anyone know why TMPGenc DVD Author 3 sometimes would shrink the output when it's not necessary?
It does this regardless of the selected target size. I noticed this once in awhile. The issue is poorer quality than the original.

Current Example: I have a video DVD. The original video VOB files size are (3x1,048,574KB) and (1x639,668KB).
I started a new project in DVD Author 3 and it read the DVD. It created 1 work .dvddata file size (1x3,785,390KB).
Notice the size of the data file and the original are the same.
I went through the process of reauthoring the DVD. Since this is just a test to see the output, I use the standard menu template.
I event went as far as selecting the DVD-5 target size. DVD Author 3 created .VOB file size of (2x1,048,404KB) and (1x647,034KB). Basically, it shrank the DVD about 1/3.

I can't see where I can configure the software so that it doesn't shrink the output.

Unfortunately, there is no way to turn it off.

The last version of TMPGEnc DVD Author that does not force a re-encode or transcode is version 1.6.

@Digitrash

Hi!

Read the following thread (and additional links provided in some of the posts to that thread) to learn how to overcome this problem:

(Although the thread refers to v.2.xxx, it is also applicable to v.3.xxx)

(You might also want to read the several post by "zoinsberg" earlier in that thread)

Sadly, those instructions will only help while encoding the original streams; ripping them off a DVD it's much too late for that.

You'll have to use another authoring software since your vobs have open gop.
