View Full Version : Blu-Ray ISO file bigger than original? Using AnyDVD+ImgBurn

Hello,
I backuped a few Blu-Ray movies onto my hard drive using AnyDVD plus ImgBurn, what I found is that the ISO filesize is bigger than the original?
For example, put the movie into PC blu-ray drive and it says 31.9GB, but after I made the ISO image, it's 39GB. It's taking lots of my hard drive space, anyone knows why?
It's not the 1000/1024 thing.

Hi!
Have you played the contents of the .ISO, to determine if you've made a proper backup?

ImgBurn will pad layer 1. The data is 31.9 but there's 6 Gb of padding.
Rip it properly without ImgBurn, which is designed as a burning prog and not a ripping one.

Yeah, the ISO files can mount and play properly using Daemon tools and PowerDVD Ultra.
So what ripping program do you recommend?
I kind of prefer to rip them into ISO so for newer version of PowerDVD(no hard-drive playback available), at least I can use Daemon tools to fake it as a Blu-Ray disc.

hraner, use the ripping program in AnyDVD. Right click on the fox > Rip Video DVD to Harddisk.

Can AnyDVD rip into ISO format?
I don't think so, but their CloneDVD program does - although not sure it does HD?

Can AnyDVD rip into ISO format?
Currently it does not. People have requested it. I don't know when or if it will be added, however.

No, CloneDVD only works on SD DVDs. Also don't forget it's Elaborate Bytes that develops CloneDVD and not Slysoft.

Slysoft recommends ripping with CloneCD and saving it in ISO format. (Just give it a filename with a .iso extension and it will save it as an ISO)

Your mean CloneCD can rip BluRay disc into ISO file? You are talking about CloneCD 5.0 on SlySoft's website? Thanks!

Yes it can.
-Open CloneCD, select read
-Add .iso to the filename and it will create an ISO instead of a split .dvd set of files
That's all there is to it.

Thanks, I tried it for a few minutes. It seems like CloneCD is doing an exact sector to sector dump.
I used Daemon Tools to mount my ISO "Curse of Golden Flowers", the ISO file size is 41GB. But if I use Windows to check the total file size on the disc, it's 32GB, about right. I'm using ImgBurn to re-build a smaller ISO file from mounted bigger-size ISO. I have no intention to burn ISOs into BD-R/RE, so I don't care about padding, etc...
Hopefully this works, that will save me about 9GB.

Awesome. I'm glad that worked. You can make the CloneCD ISO image with or without protection by disabling or enabling AnyDVD when making the image. The benefit to disabling AnyDVD is that the image is "pure" in the sense that no processing has been done on it. Vice versa, if you want a completely protection free image you can rip with AnyDVD enabled to have it remove the protection from the image on the fly. Quite amazing.

I'm using Imgburn 2.3.2.0 and I don't see padding, but worse I just can't seem to get it working. I've ripped an HD disk, a BD disk, read, build etc, and TMT, and PDVD3319 won't play the rip, any rip. Mounted with Daemon, virtual drive is there but playware just ignore it. What a weekend. Any suggestions? I've moved on to this method as Decrypter is failing with newer purchases. Thanks.

So, you have AnyDVD HD active when you make the image? If so, your ISO image should be unprotected at that point which is fine. You then mount it with Daemon Tools? So if you open up PowerDVD Ultra 3319a, you should be able to select the mounted drive letter for playback. Is that what you're trying? What errors are you getting?

Don't have AnyDVD HD. PDVD wants to update and says it did. Then nothing. Over and over. PDVD is 3319 no suffix=OEM Selecting virtual drive is no problem. TMT does nothing. I guessed since I can play the movie via disk one of these players should recognize it via virtual disk. Sometimes PDVD says no disk.

Uhhhh, what? How did you expect this to work then? You're just making an image of the disc and not removing the protection? Yea, that's going to fail miserably. AnyDVD HD will have to be involved at some point in the process. I have it decrypt the image when I mount it. Others have it decrypt the image as it's being made. All depends on your goal as to which method you choose, but, at some point it has to get decrypted. PowerDVD isn't going to play an image that hasn't been decrypted.

Then I guess I'm misinformed or I don't read well. Thanks. I'll look into Any DVDHD

Sorry - I was mistaken about the padding in ImgBurn. If the user was in ISO mode, it should have been a 1:1 copy of the disk (same as CloneCD).
I think what has happened here is there might be a discrepency between what Windows reports for the size of the data and the actual size of disc.

Nope. The way AACS works is rather complicated and I don't pretend to fully understand it, but, the original disc is required in order to decrypt the contents unless you have the title key. That key is made from several other keys one of which I believe is a volume identifier or whatever it's called. That can only be retrieved from the original disc. Any image will not have that. The only way AnyDVD HD is able to decrypt an image is that it has a database of title keys. PowerDVD does not have such a thing and requires all the pieces be in place in order to decrypt the disc. I hope that answers it even though I don't know enough to give you the full picture on how it all works.

Actually I found out why there is a size discrepency. ImgBurn or CloneCD is just doing a 1:1 sector dump, so no more or less data/padding. But it seems the padding sectors are already in the BluRay disc(maybe to avoid interrupt between two layers?). If you check the total size of the files on the disc, usually it's less by a few gigabytes. I should use ImgBurn's "Build Image from files" option, not the "disc->image read" option, that will read the files instead of raw sectors, so I'll save lots of space. Of course, this is not a 100% identical ISO copy, but I don't think I'll ever write the ISO to BD-R/RE disc, so saving my HD space is superb!
I tried a few movies, Apocalypto, Black Hawk Down, Chicago, Curse of Golden Flowers, I can save 5-7GB for each ISO. They all mount and play fine with Daemon/PowerDVD.
Additonally I did some testing by converting some m2ts clips to 8~10Mbps VC1 WMV, with 7-10GB file, I'd say there is very little quality loss on my display. So IMHO 20-40Mbps VC1/AVC's quality improvement over 8-10Mbps is not big at all if HD space is a concern.

@SamuriHLThat can only be retrieved from the original disc. (Ready for the pun?) I guess that's the KEY to the whole thing ;>}
Thanks for the basic explanation...
BTW - Didn't I read somewhere that a particular older version of Power DVD "ignored" such requirements/restrictions?

LOL :) And no, older versions of PowerDVD had a bug in that they could play BD+ protected discs even if AACS had been removed. Newer versions patched that bug. But, none could play an encrypted image as there's literally no way for the content to be decrypted.

Nothing to do with hraner, but these posts tend me to think I don't need a decrypter like AnyDVD HD. I don't see it involved in the process and these like posts are everywhere. There's no mention of decryption. Is there a secret understanding I'm just missing? Sorry if I'm just thick on this.

Yes, you NEED to decrypt the image. It's not magic. Either you have something like AnyDVD HD running when you rip the image initially, or like me, you have AnyDVD HD running when you mount the image. It doesn't magically forget about the decryption just because you rip the contents of the disc.

what could be the reasons that daemon wont mount the image? (i'am doing some authoring using encore cs4) - no errors of any kind, just the disk wont show up....

I don't use Daemon Tools to mount my images. I've been using Slysoft's free Virtual CloneDrive. Some of us ran into a performance problem with Daemon Tools (which may have been fixed by now I'm honestly not sure) when it was installed and we were ripping the ISO's. In any case, I'd check to make sure you have the latest version of Daemon Tools installed. Also make sure that your image when you create it is using UDF 2.5.

I met the same issue once.
Get rid of DaemonTools and use Virtual CloneDrive.
DT creates this issue.
