MPC issues (SWF & VOB)

I've got two issues at the moment with Media Player Classic.


1. When using MPC v6.4.8.2, it has no problem playing VOB files with the default language being English. But using the latest (2 years ago?) version 6.4.9.0, it often plays the audio tracks abnormally. One VOB (VTS_01_1.VOB) will play english, the one below it (VTS_01_2.VOB) in Greek... the entirety of 2001: A Space Odyssy in Italian, etc.

Again, using the older version 6.4.8.2 of MPC, it plays the exact same VOB files in English, every time. Under the Playback DVD/OGM option, I've set both versions to English (United States).

So why is this happening?


2. Flash files (.swf) are played with the volume VERY VERY LOUD! One of the joys of Vista is that using Volume Mixer, you can set the maximum volume of individual applications... but unlike VOB, AVI and all other file formats, SWF files directly influence the volume knob in Volume Mixer.

In other words, if Media Player Classic's volume in Vista's Volume Mixer is set to 10%, no matter how high or low you change MPC's volume bar, Volume Mixer is unnafected. It's volume level won't move, and MPC can't play any louder. If I raise the MPC's volume while playing AVI's, VOB's, etc, Volume Mixer's volume is untouched. However, when I play SWF files using MPC (both old 6.4.8 and new 6.4.9), Volume Mixer's volume goes up and down with MPC's volume. I raise the volume knob in MPC, the volume knob is raised in Volume Mixer. No other program or file does this.

All I want is for SWF files not to play in Media Player Classic REALLY REALLY LOUD. That's all. I'm forced to open and play SWF files using Firefox. It's volume is set to low using Volume Mixer, and all is well... but MPC is preferable, since it has things like position trackbars.

I thought maybe since all audio in flash files are encoded in MP3, maybe I could force MPC to use FFDshow Audio Encoder for MP3 audio, only with the Normalize function enabled... but doing this hasn't affected anything. Heck, the FILTERS box is greyed out, so I don't know what MPC is using to decode the SWF file. I've checked in Sothink SWF Decompiler, and my flash files include MP3 audio, so I don't know why FFDshow Audio isn't used. I don't know what it's using.


3. When playing VOB files using MPC, the longer a file plays, the lower the volume goes. This is an invisible decline, and the voume knob of MPC itself never moves.

When watching a video clip in VOB format, after about a minute I notice the volume is rather low compared to what it was when I started playing the video clip, so I use my mouse to click the Progress Bar anywhere during the length of the clip... and BOOM! Loud audio just like it was when I started playing. I could click somewhere at the start of the clip, somewhere at the end, or even right where I am (give or take a few seconds), and the volume will jump considerably compared to what it was a few seconds ago.

So, when I start watching a VOB, the volume is at an aceptable rate. The longer I watch, the lower it goes. I jump to anywhere in the video clip, and the volume suddenly jumps back to what it was. During all this, the actual volume knob never moves.



I've tried asking for help in the offical MPC forums, but like 95% of all posts there, no reply are ever given.

I believe MPC uses WaveOut for playback of SWF files. That means that in this case the volume slider has a direct connection to the general volume in Windows. For other formats MPC is able to use DirectSound for rendering the audio. In that case the volume slider only affect MPC itself. It is not possible to use DirectSound for SWF. So your problem isn't solvable. I would recommend using your browser to open/play SWF files.

Problem #3 probably happens because you have volume normalization enabled in MPC audio switcher options. Or if you are using an external audio decoder like AC3Filter, check those settings.

The original MPC project is pretty much dead. A somewhat active project is Guliverkli2, while actual new development takes place at the MPC-HC project.
