Getting wmv hd to work on ps3 >>

Needed:

1: gdsmux (comes with MatroskaSplitter)
2: foobar2000 v0.8.3
3: EncWAVtoAC3-1.1
4: tsmuxer (latest version)

Your wmv has to have the full hd resoltution 720p, 1080p...

1: Open gdsmux, add the wmv and select the vc1 stream then mux the vc1 to mkv.

2: Open the wmv into foobar, Rightclick wmv, Convert, Run conversion, Select wav PCM 32bit floating-point

3: Open EncWAVtoAC3 add the wav output from Foobar keep all default settings only change the bitrate(maby u have to lower the bitrate to fit a dvd5, dvd9) i use 448 mostly, then encode to ac3.

4: Open tsmuxer add the mkv from step 1(u have to set fps manualy), add ac3 from step 3 and mux to blu-ray output.

U can only playback vc1|ac3(dts) on ps3 with avchd/blu-ray dvd output.Just a *.m2ts file is not gonna work.

Okay thats it, u can always add subs to by converting srt to sup with Supread(only 1080p for now) and mux with tsmuxer

Thanks so much for the info but I am running to a little issue. Everytime I try to convert audio, I get the following error:

INFO (CORE) : startup time: 609 ms
ERROR (foo_diskwriter) : Conversion failed.
ERROR (foo_diskwriter) : Conversion failed.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Are u using the right version of foobar?, also can u playback the wmv on your pc, video & audio???

U need this version

Okay let me know if there are any problems.

Lance,

I had problems demuxing with gdsmux. With large wmv's (>6GB) it stops after 1.7% ???

I am using Winnydows Xvid4PSP to demux the original WMV-HD to an ASF videofile and extract the audio to a multichannel PCM WAV audiofile.

Then I convert the multichannel PCM WAV to AC3 just like you, using "WAV to AC3 Encoder" @ 448 kbps.

Then I remux the ASF videofile with asf2vc1.exe to a VC1 videofile to make it SMPTE VC-1 compliant.

In the final step, I do exactly the same. I mux everything to a Blu-ray file structure using tsmuxer ;)

Unfortunately, there are still some disadvantages:
1. A 24fps movie is always played back by the PS3 @ 60fps (I have a Pioneer Plasma TV which can handle native 1080p24 and display it @ 72Hz)
2. Works only on DVD5 or DVD9, not from ext. HDD or Storage Card :(
3. My WMV-HD have a resolution of 1920x816 or 1280x544, which means that I always have a green border at the bottom of my Plasma TV :(

...but it works ;)

Hi guys,

I'm pretty new to all this (just got myself a PS3 last week), so this thread was a good start. However: none of this seems to work for me.
I've tried all of the above options, and ran into different types of problems: no luck in demuxing with gdsmux (indeed stops after a while: with me it's after 4,7%). Tried the asf2vc1.exe-way: no luck there either. Resulting vc1 is just a fraction of the original file (original wmv was over 8Gb, the resulting vc1 was not even 1 Gb). What am i doing wrong here?
BTW: i'm running XP in Parallels (virtual windows machine on a Mac). Maybe that's got something to do with it?
Any help appreciated!

Update: just retried my current procedure, this time NOT in Parallels on Mac, but in Bootcamp, meaning my Mac immediately boots in Windows-mode, and thus runs Windows-apps in native mode. Guess what? It works. My WMV to M2TS (on a DVD9) works like a charm. Unfortunately -as fico99 mentioned- i also have this very annoying green border filling up the "missing" lines at the bottom of my Pioneer-plasma. For me this is unacceptable (i'm not going to watch a 2 hr movie with this green bar at the bottom): not even considering the damage it might do to my plasma (burn-in!!!). So: next step is to try & find a solution. I suppose i'm on the lookout for some sort of soft that lets me "modify" the vertical resolution of the movie (making it 1920 by 1080, instead of the 1920 by 882 it is now). If that soft would let us "fill" the missing lines with black, we're all set. The aspect-ration of the movie would remain intact, but we'd be filling up the full HD-resolution.
If anyone knows of such a soft, i'd be most grateful.

Yes for now this is only working on full hd resolutions 720p(1280x720) and 1080p(1920x1080) ,its not possible with a softmod to add borders like u are mentioning.U need to reencode when want to watch these movies on the ps3.

Lance,

Isn't there a way to alter the header of the original wmv or something? So as to make the PS3 believe it's a full-rez movie?

You could demux audio and video stream and try to alter headers with Restream 0.9. And then, again multiplex the files.

Restream 0.9 can only read and alter MPEG2 elementary video streams (M2V) and not H.264 :(

Actually, I was talking about VC-1 demuxed from a WMV-HD, but that doesn't work either :(

Awesome guide! I do have a problem & wanted to know if someone could point me in the right direction. Followed the guide using a blu-ray rip to wmvhd of Afro-Samurai. Followed all the steps & burned the BDMV & Certificate folders in Nero. The disc plays very smoothly through the PS3, but the audio is way off. It's at least 10-15 seconds (maybe more) ahead of the video. Is there anyway I can fix this??

I am trying a 1080p video file, demux, and audio extraction is fine, but when converting from wma to ac3 using EncWAVtoAC3-1.1, it only ever converts about 25% then just stops, any ideas?

sound like your video frame rate is wrong, try muxing in different frame rate eg 29.970, 23.976

I realize this is an old thread, but I have exactly the same problem...tsmuxer saying unsupported format. Media info confirms all is correct in the mkv file. BTW, marcspark, wmv3 stream is a vc-1 stream

Try uncropmkv (NOT just for mkv files!) and then it's "big brother" multiAVCHD. I've had MUCH success converting to proper ratios, keeping hidef, putting on SD or burning to AVCHD-DVD and watching on my "fitty inch" Panasonic plasma using ps3 or my BD60 Panasonic Blu Ray player. Very satisfying.

Here are links for info:

Ok, I may have a solution for those that dont want to do any kind of reencoding what so ever on the video of thier cropped WMV files, but still want to watch thier cropped WMV's on thier PS3's without the nasty "Green Bar". It is very similar to lance79's method with a few changes and some different software. The following assumes that the WMV file is a VC1 Advanced Profile encoded video w/ 5.1 audio. This is the only type of file I have tested on, so it may or may not work with other files.

Needed:

1: dBPowerAmp (with wma plugin, further directions assume it is installed)
2: eac3to
3: gdsmux (comes with MatroskaSplitter)
4: mkvmerge (only if framerate isnt correct from gdsmux)
5: tsmuxer (latest version)

First of all, you will need to create a small "filler" clip that will trick the PS3 into thinking it is a full resolution video instead of a cropped video. Create a short 2 second VC-1 encoded clip w/ 5.1 audio in your encoding program of choice (WME9 or whatever), preferably blank, but can be any full resolution clip of any length that you wish to use (1920x1080 or 1280x720).

Now you will want to turn your "filler" clip and original WMV file into mkv files w/ AC3 audio.

1.) use dbPowerAmp to convert the 5.1 audio from your WMV files into FLAC files. This may be overkill, but will minimize quality loss. You can either right click on the WMV file and choose 'Convert To' or go through the Start Menu and select the dBpoweramp Music Converter.

2.) use eac3to (command line or GUI) to convert the FLAC files into AC3 files. You can also use this to convert 2 channel audio into 5.1 if needed for your "filler" clip. Make sure bitrates match.

3.) NEED TO DO THIS FOR EACH CLIP SEPERATELY: open gdsmux and add both your original WMV file and your new AC3 file, making sure to deselect the WMA audio, and then save your new mkv file.

4.) open tsMuxeR and 'add' your "Full Resolution Filler" mkv clip first. Then 'append' your cropped mkv video. If the wrong framerate is detected by tsMuxeR, you will need to remux your mkv file with MkvMerge using a timecode file (step 5). You will need to choose either Blue-ray Disk or AVCHD disk as your output, then burn the created folders to a DVD in the UDF 2.50 filesystem. If the resulting folders are too big, you can always try to reduce the audio bitrate or trim off some of the video (like the credits)

5.) If you have the wrong framerate, open MkvMerge and add your mkv file. Highlight the VC-1 video stream and down in the 'General track options' below, you will need to add a time code file. For example, create a txt file with the following:
# timecode format v1
assume 23.976
and use that file. Then just redo step 4.

To check to see if everything worked, go to the BDMV\STREAM folder and use MediaInfo to look at the resolution of the created m2ts file. It should show it as having a full hd resolution of 1920x1080 or 1280x720 (depending on what you wanted). Now, provided everything is done properly, the video will still be moved to the top of the screen, but instead of having a nasty "Green Bar" on the bottom of your screen, it will be black. If you try to play this m2ts file on your computer, it will be stretched to the full resolution, but it works ok on the PS3.

I am attaching a couple of small VC-1 encoded "filler" clips w/ 640 kbps AC3 audio that work for me, and that you can use if you want.
