Better software upscaling?

I keep reading about better upscaling for both DVD/HD players (Oppai, Toshiba etc)and software players like Corel WinDVD 9.

I was wondering if anyone is putting any thought into a better 'freeware' open source solution. Or even non-open source. It would be great if ffdshow could come up with a better upscaling algorithm.

I doubt you're going to be able to beat NNEDI for resizing :)

NNEDI? Is that used in ffdshow then?Nope, its an Avisynth plugin, and it can only resize by 2x in a single direction. But of course that can be used to resize by 2x in both directions, for a double-size image.

Can it be used realtime on a recent CPU? Nevermind this is more for encoding than playback or rather it would be a bit of a pain to setup as a realtime filter for every video I want to play. I want to see some better upscaling algorithms in players and/or decoders or realtime playback filters.
