hello,
i need help with the movie i'm currently working on...the finished product looks good at times and at other times it's blurry...basically, some parts are very clear and the others are blurry. i chose force film in dvd2avi since it was an ntsc film greater than 95 percent...on the field options, i chose smart interlacing...also sharp bicubic...any ideas why and perhaps a solution? please advice...thanks!

Hi-
on the field options, i chose smart interlacing
Do you mean you use the Smart Deinterlace filter (I hope so anyway-I don't want my movies smart interlaced)?
If so, why did you put it on? Did you see some remaining interlaced frames after DVD2AVI? Or did you just put it on as a filter? Don't use it as a filter-that by itself could explain the blurriness-deinterlacers degrade quality. I don't know what resolution you used, but low resolution will result in loss of sharpness.

ah ok...it was smart deinterlacing that i chose under the field operations...i will change the settings and see what happens...thanks man.. :)

i ran it without choosing any deinterlacing...still same result...here's more info i was able to observe. i chose to make the movie into 2x700mb...since it made 2 files before putting them together for the final movie, i decided to check out both avi's...the first one is clear, but the second avi isn't...this is where the blurryness lies. anyhow, if someone can help me out that would be much appreciated! :) i'm now to a point where i'm willing to let someone connect into my computer remotely to help me set it up...if you're up to it, please let me know...thanks again...

are these two files by any chance named whatever_movie, and whatever_credits?
if these are the two files you are talking about then the second is supposed to be blurry. that is why you encoded the credits in a seperate process. so you could severly throttle the usage of bits when doing the credits. you did set the point where the credits start properly right? you didn't just pick a random place in the middle of the movie where you wanted to be able to cut the movie, did you?

the two files are actual movie files, not the credits...
i didn't pick a random place where the movie will be cut...it was done auto...
where do i set the point where the credits should start?
please let me know...thanks :)

perhaps this might be more informative:
i'm working on bridget jones' diary using gknot. if anyone here have successfully ripped the movie using gknot, please let me know your settings, and procedures...i've followed the gknot guide in each of my numerous trials but have ended up with the same result: clear on first half, and blurry on the rest. i'm trying to rip the movie into 2x700mb files. anyhow, if someone here can help, i'll greatly be indebted to you...also, i'm willing to allow someone into my computer remotely using remote administrator if anyone is willing to help this dood :) thanks again...

do not split the movie before encoding!
you did not read that in any guide, did you?
encode the whole movie as one, splitting is the very last thing you do.
why?
the whole purpose of 2-pass-encoding is to distribute "bitrate" to where it is needed, to achieve some kind of constant quality throughout the movie.
when you finally split the avi into two pieces of 700mb (same size) you might often find that one part is a lot longer (compresses better = e.g. less action, darker,...) than the other one.
so splitting beforehand or encoding each vob separately is the worst thing to do. it renders the whole process useless.

wef,
i did not split the movie before encoding...on one of the failed attempts to rip the movie properly, it left me two avi's in my folder...i guess it didn't delete it since there was an error during the operation, perhaps before it got a chance to delete those two files. however, i took the liberty on watching the 2 files...the first file, which was the first part of the movie, was nice and clear...the second file was where the problem was...the part of the movie where the second avi started was consistent with where my other finished products started to get blurry as well, so this was indeed consistent with what problem i was having...but all is well now...the problem did lie withing the resolution's tab...all fixed now...i've ripped my first movie :) and not one blur in on the film :) sweet! :)
