How to do pulldown on QuEnc encoded film for compatibility with old NTSC DVD players?

I have some a 24fps video I want to encode with QuEnc for a NTSC DVD that will play well on all older standalone players. Should I tick Pulldown in QuEnc's Advanced Options, or encode itas progressive in QuEnc and perform the pulldown with DGpulldown?

The difference I see in BitRate Viewer is that the QuEnc pulldown is reported as Alternate Scan type and Interlaced Frame type and Field DCT type, but the DGpulldown is shown as ZigZag Scan type and Progessive Frame type and Frame DCT type.

The pulldown is applied at display time so the encode should remain progressive. Therefore, use DGPulldown.

Is the pulldown is performed by the standalone player just as well in an older model as a newer one then?

Is the QuEnc pulldown actually encoding the pull down frames or just setting the flags differently, or incorrectly? In GSpot both pulldowns are reported the same - Interlaced 23.976 Pics/s, 29.970 Frames/s, 59.94 Fields/s.

From the GSpot and Bitrate Viewer information you provided, it sounds as if QuEnc is incorrectly setting it to encode as interlaced using Alternate Scanning, and is still applying pulldown over the 23.976fps encoded frames. If GSpot is showing 23.976 Pics/s, then it doesn't sound to me as if QuEnc is hard telecining your progressive video, but just applying some incorrect settings. As neuron2 said, encode as progressive and apply DGPulldown afterwards. I've never used QuEnc and have no idea if maybe there are some other settings you've overlooked.

So then is alternate scan is always the wrong type to use on an encode of a progressive film for NTSC DVD?

QuEnc 0.72 seems to be getting the field order wrong too according to DGindex. When I encode the film using QuEnc with 'Interlaced', 'TFF' and 'Pulldown' ticked ('Pulldown' and 'TFF' are disabled unless 'Interlaced' is ticked) and demux the resulting mpeg, DGindex reports that it's correcting field order even though it shows Top Field Order in the DGindex Info panel on preview. I can't see any settings in the QuEnc GUI settings that I could be overlooking.
