View Full Version : Playback Problems Chapters seem to be in wrong order

Hi All
Can anyone help me with a recent problem ? I have backed up a few DVDs in the past without problem. I am using DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink and Nero to burm. The last two DVDs I have backed up seem to have the chapters number wrong. If I play the disc on the PC all seems OK. However if I put them into a DVD player (tried 3) the order of the chapters seems to get mixed up and the start of playback is not the start of the film. Hope I have explained this well enough for others to understand ?

Hi!
What are the Titles and Region numbers of the problematic DVDs?

Hi,
They are Death Sentence and Shoot Emup both region 2. However because of the problem I tried Bridget Jones Diary which I'm sure I backed up before ages ago without issue, but got the same problem.

I tried Bridget Jones Diary which I'm sure I backed up before ages ago without issue, but got the same problem.Perhaps your standalone player is at fault.
Do any of your earlier burned DVD (that originally played properly, like your FIRST burn of "Bridget Jones Diary") still play properly on this same standalone player?

Previous burns still play properly, tried the "problem" discs in other DVD players and still have the same fault. I have reloaded DVD Decrypter, changed DVD Shrink to the 2008 version and Nero from version 6 to version 8 still with no luck. I have used the guides on this website to check the settings, and am now starting to wonder if I have picked up some kind of bug, even though I have firewalls and and anti-virus in place. ???

Changed DVD Shrink to the 2008 version?
Where did that come from?

@Bewilderedchanged DVD Shrink to the 2008 versionThe last/most recent LEGITIMATE version of DVD Shrink was released over two years ago...

Because I am not into the technical side of this, after making sure it was not my standalone player thought the software I had was not coping so did a google search for DVD Shrink got this back ...dvdshrink-2008.com, so signed up for the new version. Cost me about £36, already getting the feeling I have been conned !!!!!!! However the problem ocurred with my original version of DVD Shrink also.

Cost me about £36, already getting the feeling I have been conned !!!!!!!Unfortunately, you certainly have. For less than that price, you could have purchased the excellent "one-click" program, "DVD95Copy Pro"...
As far as your primary problem goes, I'm mystified.
If, as you've stated, the BURNED DVD plays properly on your PC but mixes up the chapter playback on your standalone DVD player, I'm hardpressed to understand how anything other than your standalone player could be at fault.
As somewhat of a longshot, try burning only high quality media, such as Verbatim or Taiyo-Tuden ("T-Y") - and burn at a lower speed than you've used for these problematic burns...
BTW - Although "Death Sentence", a 20th Century Fox release, should have no special or newer copy protection, "Shoot "Em Up", a New Line Cinema release very likely DOES contain newer copy protection (The Region 1 version definitely does)that your chosen ripping software could not possibly successfully rip.
Please post here, ALL (Even duplicates) filename and filesizes of the files on your original, commercial "Shoot 'Em Up" DVD.

Thanks very much for your time trying to help me. How do I go about getting the filenames and sizes you want ?
Also I have just bought Stardust for my daughter, I will try and back this up and see what happens, although I wont be able to change my media (Datawrite Titanium) at the moment.
Thanks again

How do I go about getting the filenames and sizes you want ?I guess your asking seriously, so:
1) Put the DVD in your drive/burner.
2) Use Explorer or My Computer to select the drive.
3) Doubleclick on the drive.
4) Doubleclick on the "VIDEO_TS" folder.

I have also tried a back up of Stardust and the same thing happens, plays on the PC but not the standalone. However I have not been able as yet to try this on another standalone as I did with the others.

Well, it appears that our friends at New Line chose not to "bless" the R2 version of "Shoot 'Em Up" with the annoying "XProtect" copy protection that the R1 version contained...
If you have access to another computer, try re-ripping, compressing, and burning "Shoot 'Em Up" and/or "Death Sentence" on it - using the same software. If this results in DVDs that playback properly on a standalone player, I'd suggest you have a virus on your primary system.

Thanks for your time and trouble trying another computer is a good idea, I only have one so I don't know who's yet, but will certainly give it a go. If I can't find a mate to help then I may opt to get a total clean on this hard drive and reinstall everything. So may be a while but will post the outcome.
Thanks again

Hi
Exactly the same thing happened to me, I have been using ripit4me, DVD shrink and decrypter with excellent results, but brought a new laptop, shifted everything across, it burns ok but playback is mixed up and the chapters out of order, I checked all the settings to make sure they are the same, Virus scan is up to date, can anyone help me?

@Andy M
Hi!
1) What is the specific Title and Region number of the problematic DVD?
2) What specific program and procedures did you use to rip the DVD?
3) What specific program and procedures did you use to compress the ripped DVD?

Hi
1. Tried a number of titles with the same results, Leroy & Stitch region 4 is one example
2. I used rip it 4 me one click option that opens decrypter.
3. Used DVD shrink to compress the DVD.
The weird thing is the same software works on my old computer with the same setting and DVD Cloner V (probably got sucked in and purchased this software due to frustration)works on the new machine but is does not seem as user friendly.
Should I try a re-install?

@Andy M
Try using RipIt4me with "Leroy & Stitch" again, but don't use the DVD Shrink compression step.
Then play the rip from your hard drive (Play "As DVD", not separate .VOBs) using VLC or a dedicated DVD software player, such as WinDVD or PowerDVD, to see if the chapters play in proper sequence.
If they do play in proper sequence, then use DVD Shrink to compress. If they now play out of sequence, you'll know that your problem is related to your copy of DVD Shrink.
You didn't PURCHASE the freeware program (DVD Shrink), did you?

I have now tried everything, including DVD Cloner 5 which is a piece of Junk That I paid for!.
DVD Decrypter works great but the problem is DVD Shrink, using a copy of the same software on another PC it works great just not on my new one, I have success using DVD Fab Platinum 4 to compress files after DVD Decrypter has done its thing. But my free trial is about to run out and I am not sure if it’s the best compression tool.
If DVD Shrink won’t work for me can anyone give me a recommendation on compression software?
Many Thanks

Finally figured it out
The problem was Nero 8, once I uninstalled it and went back to Nero 6 the Chapters are in the correct order on playback.
DVD shrink works perfectly now!!
Thanks for you help.

@Andy
Congratulations on solving your "mystery"!
However, I've got to say, it's extremely difficult to believe that NERO 8 could have possibly been released for sale containing such a MAJOR FLAW.
On the other hand, I have heard of "other-than-purchased" versions floating around that are less than perfect and/or contain viruses...

Hi
The Nero 8 I have is a registered legit copy purchased on line; I don’t have a problem with Nero 8, just when it’s used with DVD shrink I believe.
Thanks for you help

The Nero 8 I have is a registered legit copy purchased on lineThat's important information, as it eliminates one (major) possible cause of your problem!
I'm presuming you have DVD Shrink set up to AUTOMATICALLY start burning with NERO. If you'd care to experiment:
1) Turn OFF the automatic burn selection in DVD Shrink
2) Compress your ripped DVD with DVD Shrink
3) MANUALLY run and use NERO 8 to burn the compressed DVD (Select "DVD-Video")
4) I'll "bet you a nickel" your burned DVD will play the chapters in the correct sequence ;>}

I am having the exact same problem
Im using AnyDVD/Shrink/Nero 8. Everything rips fine and burns and can be played on PC, but when played in DVD player (tried 2) plays out of sequence. Tried Keeping up With The Steins and Casino Royal.
I will try other rippers/burners and see what happens...
On a Vista 64 bit PC.
I hope to solve this, since I love AnyDVD/Shrink/nero combo interms of ease of use for full size PC backups and then compressed burns.

Hi!
Follow the procedure I recommended to "Andy M" last year, in Post #24 here:I'm presuming you have DVD Shrink set up to AUTOMATICALLY start burning with NERO. If you'd care to experiment:
1) Turn OFF the automatic burn selection in DVD Shrink
2) Compress your ripped DVD with DVD Shrink

I did some testing and conclude there is an issue w v8 & v9 nero with Shrink, wanting Shrink to burn DVD with Nero.
I was able to manually burn the shrink output files with several burning programs, including Nero 9. However, if trying to burn from within Shrink using Nero 9, the resulting disc does not play in the correct chapter-order in stand alone DVD players (but does on a PC player).
Unless there is some way to fix this, I need to find an older copy of Nero (v6 or possibly v7). I dont see that, but will keep looking...
If anyone learns moreabout this, please post.
Thanks
