Hi,
I'm interested if anyone has done much with 'regions of interest' and 'regions of disinterest' with corresponding lossless and very lossy encoding applied. It seems to offer potential to compress 'the boring bits' within each frame as opposed across a series of frames.

FMO has nothing to do with region of interest, and I don't know why it was even mentioned in the same paper.
The real trick is not the bitstream, but the algorithm to detect interesting vs boring bits. What are you going to do, attach eye-tracking hardware to the viewer and see what piece of each frame he's looking at?

For me, the region of interest has been identified and is given as a rectangle with position and dimensions. The rest of the image is of less importance, but still of 'some' interest.
The headache is that the region moves, and changes size, fortunately not frame to frame, but probably between groups.
Possible, or am I more likely to succeed with my chocolate teapot in the Sahara ?

QEThe "region of interest" is actually most often the region with the most visual artifacts, because the eye is drawn to the areas with the most blocking/etc. So if you unevenly distribute quality, visual quality actually gets worse because the eye is drawn to the artifacts.

Point taken and that I believe very valid for general movies. This is for a study where the information in the region of interest is critical, but the other info is there as support.
