SVCD to DVD - good way to transfer?

I've a number of old SVCD that I made before I had access to a DVD burner. They're all home videos. It looks like now is the time to transfer that content to DVD.

The problem is to preserve the image quality as much as possible. SVCD does not have that great quality, but still, I'd like to keep the loss as small as possible.

So, assuming I extract the video and audio tracks to a computer - what's next? Just "blind" re-encoding with a regular MPEG2 encoder? Or is there a better way than that?

If I remember correctly, DVDLab and DVDLabPro accept SVCDs DIRECTLY as input...

You may want to try SVCD2DVD:

It doesn't recode / transcode, neither the video nor the audio, unless there is a real reason to do so. Normally the streams are kept intact when it authors to DVD format. My expereince has been good when converting my SVCDs. It's not freeware though.

dvd lab is not free either,

but there are free options
involving a bit more manual work.

Maybe I am a little ignorant, but SVCD resolutions can be 480x576 (PAL) or 480x480 (NTSC) and both are not DVD compliant. Thus some kind of re-encoding should be necessary. Right?

Not strictly compliant, no,

but you can author them, either with a pliant authorer,
or by a hack work around,
and they can play on dvd players (i'll not guess the percentage)

re-encoding is only necessary if you need 100% strict compliance

Exactly. I guess there is a very good chance that they play on all players that can play native SVCD's - which is the majority of the DVD players.
