I posted this question in the following thread but haven't seen any replys so I'm guessing not many look at the thread any more.

Anyway, I've followed this guide and successfully converted my HD-DVDs to DivX with 5.1 channel AC3 sound. My problem is that some of the encodings, depending on the widescreen style of the HD-DVD result in black bars on the top and bottom of the movie. Is this normal or should I be doing something in my encoding to get rid of them? They are a problem for two reasons. One is that when playing movies in KMPlayer or VLC, the black bars are different colors than the ones for the player. The other is that I have a suspicion that they do take up some of the bitrate in the file as they are in fact part of the video. I do a fixed bitrate encode of 8000KBit for 1080P so I'm guessing that the black bars cause me to lose some of the video quality on movies as space has to be dedicated to the black bars.
I have two questions regarding this issue. One is, what can I do about this for future encodings? Is there a command that can be included in the .avs file to crop the black bars? Or perhaps settings for the divx codec? My second question is if there is anything I can do about my existing encodings? Is there a way to reencode them to not include the black bar?
Here's a sample screenie from one of my encodings:
