Well, I have a really strange problem with the aspect ratio of a PAL movie I'm trying to encode. This is the very first time I come across such a problem, never seen it before.

I have captured a few screenshots for you to have a look (all made with PowerDVD XP v4.0 and then compressed to jpg with Paintshop Pro).

Here you are:

1. Captured directly from the DVD in "original source size" mode : http://users.forthnet.gr/ath/harryfou/Pdvd_000_original_source_size_dvd.jpg It seems that there are black bars embedded in the source, isn't it?

2. Captured directly from the DVD in "current window size" : http://users.forthnet.gr/ath/harryfou/Pdvd_000_current_window_size_dvd.jpg The aspect ratio looks OK.

3. Captured from the ripped VOB from the hard disk in "original source size" : http://users.forthnet.gr/ath/harryfou/Pdvd_000_original_source_size_hd.jpg

4. Captured from the ripped VOB from the hard disk "current window size" : http://users.forthnet.gr/ath/harryfou/Pdvd_000_current_window_size_hd.jpg

In this last one there is the problem!! Not stretched correctly...

I think this is what we call letterbox, isn't it? If I decode the vob to a d2v project file, the DVD2AVI statistics window shows a 4:3 aspect ratio... I'm confused

The rip has been done with SmartRipper 2.41 in movie mode.

if you are using gknot to rip, then there isn't any problem here, you can always tell gknot to override the anamorphic flag, by clicking on the radio button for 16x9.

if you are not using gknot, then you will just have to resize it properly yourself.

Thanx for the advice. I'm normally using mpeg2avi. I got rid of the embedded black bars by resizing @640x360 and cropping @640x272.
