I did some tests to find out how smoothly different renderers play back video. I played back and photographed (5-second exposure) a 24hz test video with a white vertical bar moving horizontally across a black background with different renderers with my display set to different (multiple of 24) refresh rates (my video card is a GeForce 6200). Ideally all the bars should have the same brightness (indicating that they were shown the same number of times). Varying brightness indicates uneven playback. Here's the results.

Thus, for ultra-smooth, judderless playback I recommend VMR7 windowed on MPC (although it's not flawless either at higher than 72Hz).

I'd be interested in how LCD monitors handle frame rates other than 60Hz.
