While appreciate 3r1c's app and it's ease of use, it doesn't seem to work for me half the time and there isn't any sort of descriptive error to diagnose the problem. Are there any other apps that do the same type of conversion? Pay or free - it doesn't matter

Try RipBot264. I hope you have at least fast dual-core :) otherwise conversion may take whole day(s)!
Before you start I recommend to uninstall all K-Lite codecs or CCCP and use Ajax installer (contains latest FFDShow, Haali Media Spliter and AviSynth)

ripbot would reencode? I have a quad core but I don't want the video re-encoded at all

bt, i'm trying out gotsent at the moment but I'm having issues with it.
