Hi all,
i have got a setup for playing content with DXVA but it does not work too well (i will comment on this later) so i decided to start from scratch:
1. installed fresh XP SP2
2. installed newest Haali Media Splitter 2007.12.29 enabling all options
3. installed newest official ffdshow tryouts 2007.12.24 with default options
4. grabbed newest mpc-hc 1.1.0.0
With the above setup as-is none of my h.264 video files is played using DXVA and hardware deinterlacing is not used either. Anamporphic BBC HDTV broadcasts are played without aspect ratio compensation. Manually selecting VMR9 renderer did not change anything.
Can someone give step-by-step instructions for which software to install and how to configure it in order to be able to play h.264 and other modern codecs in all relevant containers and using hardware offloading where possible? I know about the technical constrains of DXVA h.264 playback, buffersize etc, so i know that not all files will play hardware accelerated, but at least i must be able to play them in software mode without too much hassle, automatic fallback welcome.
About the old system:
I started with installing a recent version of PowerDVD. That enabled me to play HDTV MPEG2 and h.264 broadcast in mov and mp4 containers with nearly zero CPU load. Great. I then downloaded some mkv samples finding out that PowerDVD did not play them. Therefore i installed ffdshow tryouts 2007.12.24 and mpc in various versions (casimir666 patched etc). Some of my HDTV broadcast h.264 mp4/mov clips are played back nicely in mpc, others result in not playing but pausing at 0:00 and some even killed newest mpc-hc versions. In the meantime i got my hands on a 200GB selection of Blu-Ray h.264 mkv rips, not a single one of these is played with hardware acceleration. Depending on mpc version the files are either not played back at all, or with black picture or with 50% grey picture or played in software mode. This means that for every file i have to iterate over the mpc versions in order to find a working player. Hope this explains my reasons for starting from scratch.
If someone wants to know the exact mpc versions or wants to look at my HDTV broadcast samples (50-150MB) please give me a note. But remember that my intention is not to somehow fix the old system but proper instructions for a new system. If the instructions are worthy then this qualifies for a sticky methinks.
