Hi, I have questions about PC upgrade

I tried encoding a video yesterday.


With a sharpening matrix and HQ-Insane profile.

The encoding was pretty slow. It took me 15+ hours for first pass and 18+ hours for second pass.

Video is my own DVD and it's 1h and 30 mins long.

My specs:

CPU - Core2Duo 64bit @1.84 GHz
RAM - 2GB Only 533 MHz
Graphics - Intel Graphics 256 MB (Im not sure)



I would love to do those encoding with HQ-Insane profile in shorter time.

What specs do you suggest me to upgrade?

What I want to upgrade is,

CPU
RAM
Graphics


Do you think Quad Core Q6400 with 4GB Ram 10xxMHz can encode that in less than 8 hours?

q6400 is a 2.13Ghz quad core..
forget about it. maybe under 15 hours... and i mean MAYBE...

use a faster profile or buy a much more expensive CPU...
as a last resort, you can try with a massive overclock... ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

Agree with Sharktooth 100%, buy a faster processor if you want to encode at "Insane". Not to be snarky, but there is a reason he named the profile that.

As my hot-rodding mentor once told me, "There is no replacement for displacement."

Of course, from an engineering perspective, its possible get more HP out of smaller engine, but thats just small incremental gains. If you want to drastically change the math, you need more horses (more cylinders, more cores), or faster horses (bigger cylinders, faster core speed).

To extend on Dr.Khron's analogy, you could look at overclocking as adding a turbo or blower to a small engine. You can increase the performance significantly, but it increases the temperature at which it operates and will shorten its life expectancy.

I looked into the overclocking but someone who knows told me that my motherboard doesn't support :\


If Quad Core Q6400 will be enough, I'll look about it when I buy a new PC.

My current PC doesn't have much to uprage (the space).

1 Video Card slot
4 RAM slots
and 2 HDD slots.

I need something more upgradeable and bigger to do the INSANE thing.

It sounds like you have an OEM computer (Dell, HP, etc...)

You probably can't upgrade the processor. Even if the motherboard supports it (unlikely), the power supplies and cooling systems on these machines are usually "just enough". Going from a slow Core 2 Duo to a Q6600 or something along those lines means a lot more power and heat to deal with.

Forget about it, unless you're willing to buy:
1) New processor
2) New case
3) New motherboard
4) New power supply

Your RAM can be recycled, but why not just get 4 GB of DDR2 800 MHz? It's $90 USD! Toss that 533 MHz stuff out the window.

You can run a Q6600 at 3GHz with _no_ problem, even on the stock heatsink if you don't mind the noise.

Alternatively, use something less insane for your encoding configuration!!! HQ-Insane is unnecessary in most cases. My profiles are built around a modification of HQ-Slower.

What's your source, what file size are you targeting, and why are you using a custom matrix? You shouldn't most likely!

You have automatically forfeited your right to complain about speed when using HQ-Insane. I'm sorry, but you're doubling or tripling the encoding time for extremely marginal gains (under 1% if you want to put a number to it) compared to HQ-Slowest. Encode sanely if you want useful suggestions.
